I only use Hotmail...
by jsmith12 April 26, 2006 3:17 PM PDT
For newsletters. And given they killed POP connectivity for newer accounts I am not moving unless they can promise I keep that connection. I'll get a second gmail account for newsletters before I drop to a site that dosen't offer connectivity to Outlook or Thunder bird.

I don't even logon to the hotmail server anymore, just use my OE to read my newsletters because the online servers make it such a pain.

MS used to be the T-Rex of the computing world. Over the past
several years, they've become the T-Rex stuck in the tar pit.

people still use hotmail?
by saturnine01 April 27, 2006 4:06 AM PDT
for those of you that missed it...
TRY GMAIL.
you'll wonder how you could have ever been so foolish.

you get over 2gb of space AND with gspace (firefox extension),
you can use your gmail account as a file server.

oh... and google is actually trying to protect your privacy
whereas most every other company handed over anything dubya
asked for.

how could you be so foolish?

Some people would find it too much of a hassle moving over all the newsletters they subscribe to.

Besides which, I have a gmail account which I use for other things.

Besides which, with the setup I have I hardly get any spam, And given I use that account for newsletters, no matter WHICH company email I used, I'd get some spam. So I can't compair them equally.
Hotmail w/o ads - use Outlook Express/ Thunderbird
by shikarishambu April 27, 2006 7:13 AM PDT
I have been using OE with hotmail for the last 6 years. Great stuff- no ads etc... Add a spam filter on top of it. No spams either.

I must say the mail.live interface looks good - very similar to outlook

The catch being...

You have to be an old school user to be ELIGABLE to use the pop mail.

MS cut that likely for the very add free reason that you like. Unless they changed that, resently.
MSN and others still miss the boat
by alkolkin April 27, 2006 9:18 AM PDT
I believe that most people now use Outlook, Thunderbird, or Outlook Express. None of the webmail offerers offer a GOOD tool that synchronizes the webmail with the client. Yahoo tried but their Intellisynch does not work reliably and they offer no support. MSN offers an upgrade version that supposedly does synchronize, but it does not work and their technical support is horrible; they always bump you to another person to whom to write and try to sell you another service. I truly do not believe that ads are the source of the problem, but rather a well thought out complete, reliable solution that offers sound technical support for both laypeople and IT people.

"Gifted you with the Windows brand" Ha! More like a curse, especially since the security issues associated with Windows are the last thing you want to see in an online service. AND the only blemish on Hotmail's reputation came when they switched to an all-Windows backbone, which still leads to blackouts and deleted accounts.

Gee, Thanks Ballmer!

It apparently doesn't work with secure browsers
by rcrusoe April 30, 2006 1:04 PM PDT
I've tried the Live Beta using Firefox, Safari, and IE (on various
computers). It apparently only works correctly with IE, which I only
use for Windows Updates, so I opted out. IE is way too insecure
for anything else.

But in my case, it's no big deal. My Hotmail account is just a
throwaway spam magnet that I use when I don't want companies
knowing my real address.

Yawn, Looks like OWA to me.
by Revolutn May 1, 2006 7:28 AM PDT
I refused the initial 'free-view' cuz I didn't want to get roped into paying a service charge for a 'free' mail service once Live Mail goes, well....Live.

But let's face it, this isn't anything grand.
It looks exactly like OWA to me, which, hey this IS Microsoft afterall, they could have launched an OWA style UI for Hotmail if they wanted to a long long time ago, like...say to hype the launch of Exchange 2003?

This is such a non story I wonder why I bothered reading the whole thing and even replying.
YAWN!

Annoyances with it!
by gazbea June 8, 2006 2:39 AM PDT
One "undocumented feature" I find really annoying is the new drop-down box they have put in to the latest beta! They give you the facility to create many folders to store your mail but do not allow you to scroll down the list any more to move the mail anywhere!

Admittedly however, I would not use this if the "drag and drop" feature actually worked properly. In the early days, it used to work, nowadays however, if you attempt this then the email will be dumped in a completely different folder so you need to find it! It's more of a "drag and hope"!!

... I have reported these bugs a few times but nothing seems to have happened. A couple of weeks ago they released a new version of the beta with these faults and then quickly reverted back to a version that allowed me scroll through the list to move items.

About a week ago, they released another version of the beta only to remove the scroll drop-down list again with one that I can't see past the folders beginning with 'C'!

I thought they had noticed this problem and were doing something about it... obviously not!

Windows Live Mail Beta- Buggy!
by Jayjayjo June 13, 2006 5:52 AM PDT
I've been toying with the 'New' Hotmail look now since I got the email asking me to participate in the all new MSN Windows Live, Windows Live Mail & Windows Live One Care.
Windows Live Mail had alot of hype around it, so hell why not ... The first thing I missed was the tick boxes next to each email, that was not a problem drag & drop but thats all well and good if you don't have alot unorganised emails, thats the thing with MSN's new look. The emails you have in your Inbox, have to be organized thats where the Options come in handy, customize it to how u like its great, but the looks end when it comes to performance. "Sorry can not perform task requested, try again later", and thats just trying to open up the web site, that just don't quit cut it.
Refresh the page okay, three times a charm.
Having a problem with composeing a email the cursor on the page has a nasty habit jumping around the email letter, its a pain when your trying to reword and or edit it.
What is the size of the attachment you can attach to the WLM email?
A:10mb B:5mb C:3mb or D:less than 1mb
If you said A:10mb yes you are right, but I have tried files under 10mb and no luck, under 5mb noo, okaay 3mb no .... only files under 1mb could be sent, and I have tested the ISP, sent a 2.05mb zipped file though it with out a problem but just couldn't send it through WLM.
I feel the WLM guys just can't get it quit right with WLM because they keep sending me the same answer to the different problems WLM currently has. :S

PASSWORD
by JOHN BALL 28 July 4, 2006 5:49 AM PDT
I hate the fact that I keep getting asked to confirm my password. I have asked the system to remember it but I still get asked every third or forth login. Yahoo does this also and that was why I switched to hotmail.

auto-forwarding/ POP3 with hotmail
by chokboi March 2, 2007 9:33 PM PST
hey,
i sent them a message asking about this and they responded with something about how my input will be passed on and they are always looking to improve the setup blah blah yada yada. has anyone gotten any straightforward answers as to why hotmail doesn't have auto-forwarding or POP3? is there anything outside system that can be used to auto-forward stuff from hotmail?
thanks!
