Should Roadrunner ISP clients such as me get a backup ISP that isn't blocked from sites routed through Cogent, or simply await a resolution? Seems like having to have vhs and betamax for those as old as I!
I couldn't get into Drudge yesterday but can today. Did he re-route?

Call the FCC

If the issue is affecting VoIP then it's affecting your 911 service and that is illegal. 1-888-CALL-FCC

911 and VoIP
by October 6, 2005 1:42 PM PDT
VoIP suppliers even tell you that you should have a regular phone line for 911 in case of outages. I don't think there's anything the FCC can do for this.

Yes, 911 is local, but for those who don't know about VoIP, 911 calls have to go through a relay system to get to your local emergency office.
My Company's Bank is now 1.1.1.1
by October 6, 2005 12:49 PM PDT
We can't connect to our bank to do wire transfers and all the stuff that our company does all day basically. When I did a WHOIS on the bank, I get a 1.1.1.1 as their IP. *** is going on? Are they gonna fix this situation or what? Do I just wait until the DNS fixes itself by propogating the net?

Maybe Calling Cogent will help?
by October 6, 2005 1:31 PM PDT
I know we've talked about calling Level3 and complaining there. What about calling Cogent? Perhaps thats the thought Level3 has that will force Cogent to cough up the dough - the amount of complaints to Cogent.

Reminds me of the DirecTV / Disney blow-out a year or two back.

Just talked to Cogent
by October 6, 2005 2:34 PM PDT
I just called the sales office for Cogent after trying the office in D.C.

The man I spoke to was very pleasant, understanding and was taking aback slightly when he asked "Are you a Cogent customer?" to which I replied "No. I am a hosting company customer than has their servers at a dc that is on a backbone from Cogent"

I mentioned the fact that the Cogent website (www.cogentco.com) has no mention of the situation in the press release or news area. He said he just talked to someone in marketing about the situation and will call them and suggest this to them because "It's a real good suggestion" and he was "Suprised to find there was no mention of it in the press releases"

I told him I felt like "An airline passenger put out because the airlines can not fly because the air traffic controllers are on strike" and he liked that analogy a lot.

His view? That Level3 should have not done this without notice and should not be the big bully on the playground.

Oh yea, he's reading the coverage.

The hits just keep on coming...

Cogent has failed their responsibility
by aabcdefghij987654321 October 6, 2005 1:54 PM PDT
It's just impossible to tell who is at fault right now for all of this but Cogent deserves blame for the end-user's difficulties.

Before the service was terminated the routing should have been updated (assuming they were warned it would happen), since the service is still down someone should have fixed the incorrect routing by now and the fact they haven't makes it likely that Cogent has failed to perform their duty since it's their routers which are still trying to send traffic in a direction which is no longer possible.

The fact that they haven't fixed their routing says they are trying to use their customers to force a reconnection.

Level-3 are bad guys - Cogent are good guys
by October 6, 2005 2:02 PM PDT
I've done business with both Level-3 and Cogent.

Cogent is a positive force on the Internet. They are bringing down bandwidth prices. The quality of their service is excellent and their technical support shines too.

Level-3 on the other hand is a brutish, old-fashioned, monopoly-wannabe. They are trying to control the internet. They have always pushed around other companies. Their arrogance is matched only by their business incompetance.

It's important the public come out against Level-3 and for Cogent.

Cogent can make our lives better. Level-3 will make our lives worse.

Level-3 is the enemy of the internet and the people.

Level-3 also mistreats their own employees. They threat their workers like numbered slaves.

Please get involved in the fight.

I'm not taking sides...
by October 6, 2005 2:15 PM PDT
I don't have an interest in the treatment of employees by a company that I do not own shares in or work with directly.

My concern is that my ISP/hosting co/DC/etc is being affected and they are not the ones causing an issue. There's several layers to this, with Cogent and Level 3 being at the top of the list. It all flows downhill.
The Recent Difficulty Between Two carriers
by October 6, 2005 2:17 PM PDT
This is not a good thing. The EU and the UN have already begun to make their case that they should share control of the internet. When private firms bicker and slow traffic across the internet, this fuels the arguement that somehow a huge international socialistic government agency should take over the whole show. To those of you now slowing the internet over financial arguments, better cease and decist.

No one else is talking about this in the press...
by October 6, 2005 2:18 PM PDT
No one else is talking about this in the press. Reuters, CNN, Fox, Wired, PCMag, USAToday, etc. has not picked up on this. Seems that C|NET "Owns the story" (meaning they are the ones that broke it) and everyone else is either unaware or blind to this.

Wonder how long before other outlets talk about this. I can't believe I am saying this but I am looking forward to "Attack of the Show" on G4 tonight to see if they mention it at all. I've not been a fan of the show that replaced ScreenSavers but that's neither here nor there.

Cyber Wars Affect On E-Commerce As Networks Collide

Cyber Wars Affect On E-Commerce As Networks Collide

As electronic service networks collide, the downside is the effect on e-commerce. That should not happen in a perfect world but this year of cyber ID theft has taught us the world especially online is anything but perfect.

It is an unfortunate result of network disputes that sometimes spill into courts but are about real or suspected damages either caused or supsected to be caused by their opposition.

More and more disputes are on the horizon as more and more e-commerce solutons are used to stop cyber crime and make the Internet a Safe Place Online or as people seek Peace Of Mind Online.

That is why there has to be not only global solutions but global platforms that effect everyone in such a way that disputes are handled offline and not by denial of services.

These coming global platforms are obviously American Express, Visa, MasterCard and in the future NewCashtm that will go everywhere and give the charge card user a cart that travels network to network without being blocked by competing networks.

The future is here now and has in fact been here for five years but the present problems are forcing everyone to get it all together in a cohesive way. No more blackouts is essential for the growth of e-commerce.

Mr. Alishtari's comments must be adjusted to the buyout of EDI Secure LLLP

A year ago, January 2006, EDI Secure LLLP was purchased by IDPixie LLC which owns the patent US 6,598,031 B1 granted on July 22, 2003 for APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR ROUTING ENCRYPTED TRANSACTION CARD IDENTIFYING DATA THROUGH A PUBLIC TELEPHONE NETWORK from inventor Jeffrey Ice. So to update EDI Secure LLLP's place in the marketplace, I add the above and below data.

So if Cogent is such a great company why would one contract dispute take down there entire service...hmmm could it be because every other provider including AOL has terminated their agreements with Cogent because Cogent was using their peering for purposes against thier contract? Cogent knew this was coming and is throwing blame on somebody else...figure it out

Level 3 now a Tier-2 ISP?
by killerpenguinz October 6, 2005 3:42 PM PDT
I'm hearing that Level3 has been marked by the Government as a Tier 2 ISP right now, and they are using the Qwest backup to conduct business. Anyone have any insight to this?

shooting themselves in the foot/here come the lawmakers
by turnkit October 6, 2005 4:07 PM PDT
Level 3 has no idea what they are unleashing.

These arrangements have been unregulated because the ISP's played well with eachother.

My guess is that Level 3 just invited the goverment in to regulate the industry for the protection of the consumer. This means stifled growth and hard-wired concepts. Start expecting some technical legalese to come, the FCC should arrive any day now.

Know internet protocols and are a lawyer? You're potential has just gone 10-fold!

Level 3 Plays Chicken and Nobody Swerves
by turnkit October 6, 2005 4:10 PM PDT
Level 3 has just forced the government into legislating how IP protocols are used.

The government's job is to protect those who can't protect themselves. We pay and we expect good service.

These guess are playing chicken and they forgot to swerve.

Reporting Level 3's Terror Attack on United States Commerce
by October 6, 2005 4:22 PM PDT
I just contacted the Department Of Homeland Security
http://www.dhs.gov via telephone at 202-282-8000 to report Level 3 as committing a terrorist attack on the Internet commerce of The United States Of America.

They directed me to The United States Emergency Computer Response Team at : http://www.us-cert.gov/ and I telephoned them at 888-282-0870. They were very kind and understanding and know of the problem. They asked that I file an incident report on their website here :

http://www.us-cert.gov/

They said that once an incident report is filed then they can contact Level 3 to determine if the attack is intentional.

I suggest to anyone whose business is being damaged by Level 3's terror attack on the United States to please contact the United States Computer Emergency Response Team and file an incident report right away!

Roadrunner accessing both Cogent & Level 3 again
by October 6, 2005 4:33 PM PDT
I have Roadrunner Cable and I just got access to both the Level 3 and Cogent sites again. Not sure what this means or how they did it. Guess everyone calling customer service did something for once...at least at Time Warner.

Road Runner in Cincinnati is affected, as certain websits are impossible to get to, but their rival Zoomtown DSL is not. I'm switching.
