The premise doesn't "click"...

The simple statistical premise behind the Nielsen study--that future search engine usage can be extrapolated in a linear way from expected growth rates of (American?) net users-- seems like a shaky proposition at best. There are 3 1/2 billion people on the planet who aren't on the net yet, a generation of people who aren't sophisticated net users yet but will be someday, and the masses of youth who are working their way through schools and libraries which are becoming ever more effective at teaching how to search. The publishing industry and academia are putting ever more content on the web and the telecommunication industry is expanding its broadband capacity every day. No, I can't buy the prediction when it's based on such a limited set of parameters. Hopefully, however, the disgust of the internet public with advertising trickery will make the prediction come true anyway...
