Skype: Give the good example!

Skype should give the good example by opening up their protocols, before petitioning others to do the same. I find that highly hypocritical otherwise.

Just to Correct You
by zboot February 23, 2007 9:01 AM PST
Skype is not asking for anyone to open up protocols. They are asking for carriers to allow customers to run any software they want on their phones. For example, imagine if your ISP did not allow you to install skype on your computer and if you wanted voice service, you had to purchase an additional plan from them. This is exactly the case with the wireless carriers. I can purchase an internet only plan, but if I want voice service, I have no choice but to use their own, rather than installing skype and getting voice on the internet service I already pay for.
CTIA - funded by carriers?
by lonny paul February 22, 2007 8:35 PM PST
CTIA, smell the coffee! There are an increasing number of legitimate retailers offering unlocked phones now on their websites and in retail stores. People want to have the same choice as they do with their home phone and it should be subject to the same rules. It's only correct in this market - and an open market is truly the best thing - however with AT&T and Verizon having such a large share of the marketplace, it's time to start to allow wireless CLECS just as the RBOCS had to.

Skype, don't worry you will have you WI-MAX network soon, it will be much faster anyways. Let the cellular companies enjoy their last few years of presence.

The Carriers should embrace this concept.

In the UK skype service is actually promoted by a Mobil company called 3. With great acceptance to the marketplace I may add.

The FCC has to apply the Carterfone rules in this case because we are limiting are capability
to attract new developments in this IP driven market.
