They're doing it to promote the monthly subscription services. Even when it was $0.10 per message, I'd send enough text messages in a month to justify the cost of the $10 unlimited picture/text messaging package. It's just that simple.

Agreed limefan...also, everyone should be glad that we don't have the voice service prices they have overseas! More to call a mobile number, etc... The price we pay for our bundled minutes is a bargain, for the most part. If you want to text away, then just buy a monthly plan. Most are about $10/unlimited as limefan said. If you send more than 50 texts/month, then it's well worth it.

My iPhone comes with 200...never use them all.

Reminds me of SUV sales going up with gas prices... It's all because we (Americans) are dumb consumers.

The curious fact that some people like being raped doesn't make it OK.

As a business owner we have put Txting into our marketing mix and are seeing great results. Typically 10 - 20 % response rates depending upon the offer. We researched several services and www.txtwire.com had the most features for the best rates.

We use Xanthem. www.xanthem.com. Not only do they offer some of the best texting service features, they are a media communication company and have the ability to communicate with your customers no matter what form of communication they are using. We have seen up to 25% response rate.

This price inflation is a complete rip-off. Something needs to be done to regulate these cell phone companies to make sure the consumer is protected. Government intervention perhaps? http://www.mindreign.com/en/mindshare/Technology/SMS-Fat-Cats-Ripping-Us-Off/sl21528576bp309cpp10pn1.html seems to think so...
