Franchise lockouts
by Methuss December 28, 2006 3:36 PM PST
So what are Verizon and AT&T doing to disband all these franchise lockouts that local governments have been selling to the cable giants for years? Are they planning to just run roughshod over the local governments or push for a federal mandate to disband local franchise licensing?

Trying a different tack

AT&T is trying to get their service defined in a way so they won't
have to negotiate for franchise fees. Arstechnica.com had a much
better review of the issue, which this article pretty much ignores -
which is the bottom line of why AT&T is taking so long to deploy.
It's because cable companies want to force them to compete on
level ground.
Hooray, better service from Comcast

Well, as soon as Verizon or AT&T announce their plans to enter the Seattle market, that is.

What? Competition lowers prices and improves service and offers choice? You mean it's true after all?

Wishful thinking!

What'll probably happen is you'll still get lousy service from both companies. Sort of like the big three cell phone companies... they have you locked into a contract and there's so much movement of subscribers between them, they all agree that customer service is the least of their worries. Alas, such is the case with commodity business. It's like expecting good service from a gas station, they pretty much don't care whether you get gas from them or not.
