- Unlike popular belief there's no significant difference between internet2 and it's "Abilene" backbone and the commercial internet the rest of us are using. Abiline is just a private backbone set up for a special purpose, reserved for a limited number of users, but otherwise connected to (but not providing transit for) the rest of the internet. It's mainly IPv4 with some experimental use of IPv6, and it is built using the same network equipment used by large commercial carriers. The ISP-industry picks up on every new high-speed part of equipment as soon as it becomes available. No "super-iron" exist to build a super network faster than what's in production use in commercial networks.

- Hey "Mongo Bongo" why don't you sign your actual name instead of some made-up moniker? Your comments would be far more credible if you let people know who you really are.

(3 Comments)Internet2 is in other words just another high-speed private data network, just like internet(1) once was. Latency in the internet1 core has gotten close to speed-of-light so there isn't any gain there either.
Don't try to make Internet2 something it isn't.
