Oy the ol' IE is a standard because everyone uses it arguement.
That sentence makes me twitch every time I read it.

Okay 90% of the worlds population uses it so it's a de facto standard. Then let's make it a standard. Microsoft has to open it up so that mozilla, apple, opera and anyone else who wants to create a web browser can see exactly how they do things. That way if websites use ms specific functions and features people who use other os'es and browsers can see the sites as they were coded. And that goes for everything else like activeX, DirectX or anything else the MS what's to enable to their browser to handle.

It didn't get very much coverage but after Hurricane Katrina the dangers of coding for IE specifically were exposed. The government had set up a site to help people locate friends and family members that were displaced after the storm. If you tried to access the site with something other than IE 5.5 or 6.0 you were out of luck.

So all those people spent days or weeks not knowing the fate of their friends and family. Why? One, instead of creating a browser that actually adhered to W3C standards Microsoft helped create they created a browser loaded with windows only features. Two, the government created a site that used IE specific code and features. Mozilla is guilty of this too or at least they were.

Standards Compliance if a major gripe of mine. The W3C is made up of representatives of all the big tech corporations from all over the world, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, and Mozilla included. They have some of the smartest people working on and creating standards. I think it behooves anyone that creates a browser to make sure it complies with the openly documented and publicly available standard. Once the browser is 100% standards compliant then they can add all the OS, closed source, or proprietary features they want.

That web site debacle demonstrates something else. Any thing that the government makes available for public consumption on the web should not be in a closed or proprietary format. If there's no other way they should pass a law to that affect

Don't like it at all... Firefox for life!
Unfortunately, I have to use Safari because it is the only browser that functions properly for my online class I am taking. It SUXXXXXXXXX DONKEY BALLS!!!

1. Does not work w/ Logitech MX Revolution (my mouse). Forward/back buttons on mouse don't work to navigate thru pages. Thumb wheel only scrolls up/down, but i have it programmed to zoom in/out of things (in IE and FF, this is a shortcut to inc/dec the font size.

2. No speelling chekcer??

3. No F11 full screen.

4. When using the address bar, it won't automatically select the current address for deletion. Go ahead, IE and FF users, put your cursor on a blank area of ur address bar. The whole thing is selected so you can type in a new address. In Safari, you must MANUALLY select and delete!

Give up Apple! leave our turf!
