Google
I think Google has some wonderful technology. I do like this new map thing but I do think they went a bit far with it.

This Street Map technology is great. They could scale down the picture part though as I do feel that is intrusive. And just because we think that Bush has intruded in our privacy, which his wiretapping and spying on americans does and is illegal, does not make it right for people to do it.

But if they took this map, and showed the streets in more detail, such as like the insets for cities on an atlas, and even put like the block numbers that would be really helpful. The names of businessnes, ect. But, I think they should leave out the cam part.

Being able to see what is in my backyard, when I have put up a privacy fence to keep prying eyes out of my business, which by the way cost money, is an intrusion of privacy.

A map is supposed to be used in order to find your way around. When you get to the destination, a then detailed map of the area is great.

Google should back off a bit. What people do, and where they go is no ones business but theirs. So I am giving Street Maps the thumbs down unless google changes things.

Google=The most evil company on the planet
Right now, when I look around, it's hard for me to find any company that is as right out evil and determined to continue to trample on everyone's rights rights and privacies (both people and companies) alike, like Google is/does.
Being of sound mind and determined to be in control of my own life, I have stopped using Google long ago. This ban naturally extends to every Google site that I know of, inlcuding Youtube.
I consider it my persona duty to educate everyone I know about the howreally dangerous Google really is to the well being of Americans, and get as many people to stop having anything whatsoever to do with Google as I can.

Couldn't agree more - that is why I have switched to Anoox
You have hit it right on the head.
If people do not wake up to the threat that Google & Yahoo pose to information & commerce on-line, by entering business after business, and by running a search engine where people have no real control of the search results, it will be too late soon.
That is why I have switched to this new search engine called Anoox which is powered by the knowledge of the people and is operated on a community based business model.
And I am evangelizing about it to all to do the same. I hope more and more people realize what you and me have realized.

Security concern
As a general user, I find it refreshing use these tools for finding my way in unfamiliar locations. My concern though is much greater than how Google will use the resulting information. I am concerned with how much information we are readily handing over to our enemies. Especially the religious fanatics who are bent on destroying us.

GOOGLE IS FUTURE.........
Why make a lot of fuss about it? This is just a beginning. Live CCTV is next. And, may be in next 5-10 years google will scan your faces and will have complete behavioral pattern of yours. That way it will be able to serve you ads at every corner. Tailored to your own personality.
It is not a plot from the movie "Minority Report". It is inevitable future. Like it or not. You can run but can not hide.

Are we all paranoid?
Are we all really that paranoid? After all look how much of our
personal information is out there already.
If a Google can see you, imagine all the people going by in cars and
walking. If you are really concerned about privacy. Then put up
blinds!! Cancel your credit cards and use cash, even close your
bank account. Move into the mountains and become a hermit.
Otherwise, DEAL WITH IT people!!!

It already exists!

Er, that already exists, London Metropolitan Police have CCTV cameras that can recognises people's faces and can even detect behaviour pattens. Westminster City Council have microphones attached to CCTV cameras that can detect speech & some northern cities have cameras with speakers to ?prevent anti-social behaviour?.

I wonder if France will have GoogleStreetMap, as in France, everyone has the right to private life as stated under article 9 of the French Civil Code, so photographing someone without permission is illegal.

London CCTV
Good to know that it already exists in London. There are upsides and downsides of law enforcement doing it. It is different when it comes to companies doing it that would blow aways everyone's privacy. however, london cctv thing is still not being monetized by companies to serve personalized ads. It may already be in works in googleplex to monetize it. Is it good or bad? It is upto people to decide. But, it is inevitable. If not google than may be some other company. But in its present form; it seems a little over the line. But, that is something "perfectly legal" so, it won't go away.

An extension of the human eye - that's all
I am 60 years old - an antique to be sure. Being a part of the ancient world gives me a unique perspective on life today. I earned my grad degree in the days when all that was available to me for research and study were books. Can you imagine! No Internet!

In those days if we didn't want anybody to see us naked or smoking pot or picking our noses, we simply didn't do so anyplace where we could be seen. Simple.

The same applies today. Video cameras, cell cameras, security cameras and satellites are all extensions of the human eye. The rules have not changed, silly people, the technology has changed.

If you don't want to be seen doing whatever you are doing that is not quite right, then do your dirty deeds indoors.

As for me, well, I'm a ham and I love a spotlight.

No consent? Sue
Generic crowd shots don't need consent from people in the pictures. However, when a photographer takes a picture of a specific person with intent, a consent form is usually required. Google is putting pictures of individuals on its site without verifying consent of the people.

Isn't there a privacy lawyer somewhere who can give specifics on the chance of a large lawsuit anyone can sign onto?

wear a mask or a hoodie
Really, if you must go out in public and don't want to be identified, wear a mask or disguise.
A mask of the American flag would be perfect since our loyalty couldn't be questioned. If you are going to a strip club, then wear a George Bush or Dick Chaney mask. Or, take pictures of public and corporate officials, they won't mind.

There is an answer: it is this lil search engine called Anoox
There is an answer to all these invasion of privacy by Google or Yahoo, it is this little search engine called AnooX. 1st, they are only in the search engine business and not into 100s of different businesses as Google or Yahoo are.
2nd, Anoox search results are fundamentally better and more accurate because AnooX is powered by knowledge of the people, that is YOU and me.
More info about this is here:
<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.anoox.com/voting_overview.jsp" target="_newWindow">http://www.anoox.com/voting_overview.jsp</a>

And there are other reasons I have switched to Anoox and am urging all to do same, it has
mainly to do with the fact that AnooX is a Community based (not-for-profit) business.
So whereas Google or Yahoo are run to maximize profits &#38; share prices, which means control the "eye balls" of people world wide, Anoox is run without any concerns to profits or share prices, it is run for the benefit of community members which means YOU and me.
<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.anoox.com/adp_overwiev.jsp" target="_newWindow">http://www.anoox.com/adp_overwiev.jsp</a>

One implication of this fact is that the cost of Advertising on Anoox is much lower. In fact most months we make more as an Anoox affiliate than we pay for Advertising on Anoox. To say Anoox is way cool, is putting it mildly :)

Also Anoox is run based on an Open Source model, where no ONE company controls it but many companies from around the world do. So if you are not brain washed by the hype about Google &#38; Yahoo, if you think for yourself, then use the search engine that is "Powered by the Knowledge of the People", use Anoox.

New name, same lies
1. Anoox sux. It is slow and its results are horrid. You know this, it has been proven in the past. You tell me a search query that provides results half as good as one of the big three and I will check it out. Until then I will continue to belive that Anoox sux. For a laugh did a search for Apollo; nothing legendary, nothing to do with space, not even anything to do with Adobe. Just loads of 2-bit businesses that believe your lies.

2. Anoox is not open source. You need to pay to see the code. What part of open source don't you understand?

3. You don't exist. Prove me wrong. Why can't you just pay to advertise, eh Dean?

I love anoox 2 :)
I have been using anoox for a year now and I love it. I specially love the fact that its search results are powered by the people rather
than by the machines mysteriously as is the case with the big 3 search engines. I really think it is the most revolutionary thing that has happened to the search engine industry and that it will punch a giant hole in the Google &#38; Yahoo
trying to control information world wide.

This does not mean Anoox cannot improve in certain areas, such as speed of their search results. It should be faster.
And what is with that name! What the hek does Anoox mean?
But all and all it is the best new search engine I have seen, and one that delivers quantum leap in value to search users and advertisers.

P.S., In order of honesty I should state that I am an Anoox Affiliate. And that we love it. Specially through the super Affiliate program we are making close to $10,000 per month. So yes I have a reason to be talk up Anoox. But hey anyone can become an Anoox affiliate.

Are Google's moves creeping me out?
No, not at all. Why would they? I don't understand why anyone would be concerned over what Google does. Some are, and I respect that, but there is always the loud minority that reaches the news. I mean, if you use Internet, you are using other companies property or services. You can't expect total privacy. Street view is a cool thing, nothing you could not have seen if you walked by yourself or took a photo. Just that it's saved in time and showed for the public.

Just like cigarettes
Trying to tell someone that this one invasion of privacy is going to hurt them is like trying to tell someone that one cigarette is going to. The simple fact is that one cigarette will do no physical harm, will not hurt you in any detectable way. Will ten cigarettes? twenty? hundred? It takes an accumulation of thousands to destroy. You can not argue successfully against one cigarette, you have to argue against a life of them. Similarly, this one invasion of privacy causes almost no perceptible damage. It is difficult to point out one invasion and show harm, which is how it is always attempted. Legally, you can only argue against one invasion at a time, impossible. The problem is not in the one, it is the accumulation of thousands of invasions of privacy, they must be argued against as a whole to show real damage. Unfortunately, quitting invasions of privacy is like quitting smoking, it must be done one invasion at a time. And, until we can get people to recognize how all of these small invasions add up to damage our lives, we will be unsuccessful at stopping the one.

People Please, remember Youtube??
Please, all this commotion. Doesent anyone remember youtube???? How about all those plane chashes or car crashes where someone caught the event on video tape. There are cameras everywhere right now. Period. Google has more visability, thats all.

The issue may need some resolving legally but that applies to traffic cameras, security cameras, peoples videotapes, Girls gone wild --- everywhere :-), etc.

Hey, I can see my house on Google earth and can tell which car is in the driveway. Get used to it. It will only increase. Trust me. :-)

I use Live Search - don't worry about Google
I personally use Live Search. It's starting to get better than Google. Google lately has done tons of moves, that has started making me dislike them. So I tried some alternatives, and guess what, Live Search is actually pretty good. I'm moving on, and switching to Live Search. In most ways, it's more awesome than Google. After I saw that Google Master Plan video on YouTube, it changed my mind about Google. Who needs Google? Google might have started the birth of web search, but companies are always innovating, and technology moves on. So hasta la vista Google, I'm moving on to Live Search.

pay no attention to this microsoft employee
It would take an obscene amount of ignorance for someone to change from google to microsoft because they don't like big brother...

Also the complete lack of reasons why Live Search is "starting to get better" or "more awesome" leaves me to think this is part of a marketing approach.

Also did you notice how he never said "Microsoft"...

But I bet if it would be Microsoft many people would be much more worried, which leads one to think people are really not truly as worried about their privacy as they are worried their most hated company know something about them.

I have major concerns with Google within days of my home going on to street view i realised that the google vehicle photographing my home had trespassed down my private drive and had used a camera on a pole that was substantially higher than the average height of a human being to peer into my rear garden.
Subsequently the information shown on this site was used by a local youth in perpetrating a burglar at my home, the youth was caught and admitted that he chose my home as a result of the information on google street as he felt that he would beunobserved whilst breaking into the rear of my property.
Despite contacting google and asking them to remove all views of my home i find that i have to do a whole series of views and have to ask google to remove each of them individually, why they cannot remove all pictures of my home as requested i do not understand, especially considering that their vehicle gained the majority of the information as a result of an illegal trespass.
The estate where i live has private drives which pass along the side of our houses and they are not public rights of way upon searching google street i have ascertained that the google view has commited a mass trespass throughout our estate and has put hundreds of house at risk from criminal activity.
Another major concern is the number of elderely residents who reside in my neighbourhood who do not use then internet and are, therefore prevented from requesting that views of their home are removed.
Google sets itself up as the judge as to whether they will allow images to be removed from their site and often refuses such requests. They claim that the views that they publish are only those that the public can see from the road an obvious lie as any individual looking at the views of my home would have to be approximately 3 metres tall and would still have to have trespassed down my drive, around the back of my house boundary and up tp my garage all of which cannot be seen from the road.
Google do not respond other than by impersonal e-mails which do not give any other method of contacting them.
Typical american arrogance the sooner this company is banned the better, they are a prime cause for the growing claim for a need for censorshipon the internet being voiced by many people who are concerned at invasions of privacy.
I am sorry if this has been a long blog but my neighbours and i are concerned at the increasing use of google street as a burglars tool, and the lack of ethics shown by this company.

Excuse me but there's a whole heck of a lot more that's been going on here than just street mapping.

Google has in fact "indexed" some Oregonians email accounts WITHOUT their permission and against the ISP's policy severely compromising the security of the email users account and the clients they represent. Hacking Sarah Palin's and Paris Hilton's email, text and cell phone records resulted in jail time for some. Google's activity should be fully investigated and be made a matter of public record. The victims of these intrusions should also be notified so that they can advise their clients of lapses in security.

Here's are two messages from Network Solutions to a client who had repeatedly expressed concerns of hacking and anonymous harassment via email since May 2006:

Dear xxxxx,

I am sorry to hear that you were experiencing issues with Google indexing webmail. I have confirmed the there is a file http://mail.########.com/robots.txt, that tells Google not to index mail.xxxxxxxxx.com. This means that Google is ignoring this rule to not index the site. You will need to setup a Google Webmaster tools account to request Google remove the listings. For more information please contact Google.

Consider that;
1) physicians receive and transmit proprietary communications and information that have privacy requirements under HIPPA, *some patient photos are showing-up without patient and /or physician authorization on various websites linked to doctors who pay for advertising but did not do the work the images found on Google imply. Images again Google did not have authorization to retransmit. Cost of a HIPPA violation? $1,000,000.
2) real estate brokers having confidentiality and fiduciary requirements and
3) confidential information frequently exchanged online between attorneys and their clients. By law those communications are required to be protected under client attorney privilege.

These areas and others I feel quite certain have been violated by Google when the firm HAS accessed communications not intended for third parties, information again they do not have authorization to access and then proceed without authorization to publish some of that information against the ISP providers policies.

"Creepy" is putting it nicely. These activities are a violation of privacy and virtual eavesdropping.

Not even in George Orwell's 1984 would you have imagined how invasive public cameras have become; or how they would effect your everyday life. I have a friend that watches her x-husband on traffic cameras, she showed me how she does it. I really would like to be able to go to the cafe and not have to worry about my picture being tagged on facebook
