I dont know why you people try to blame someone else for your stupidity, Anyone with half a brain knows you always go to custom install and uncheck what you dont want. If you are to lazy to do this, then it is your own falt. Key words here " What they may not expect are all the other tools they get when not ""Paying Attention."" Maybe you should Pay Attention from now on. If you dont know how to use the internet, maybe you need to go take a internet class.

there are many many people who choose a typical install because the word "custom" scares them. the typical install should include YIM ONLY! otherwise they are pushing spyware onto the users machine.

When I launch Net2Phone from the new YM I am treated to adds at the bottom of the dialer in Spainish. I know I live in California, but isn't this going a bit too far?

Oh, and Net2Phone saw fit to charge me a $1.99 service fee even thouh I only signed up for pay-as-you go. And since Yahoo glommed on the VoIP capability from Net2Phone, I have to deal with N2P for all billing and support issues. Yahoo washes their hands of any issues. Thanks Yahoo, I'm going back to Skype now.

Doesn't ANYBODY read nowadays?

Seems people are way too lazy to even read now. IF people had bothered to READ instead of just clicking NEXT, they might have some noticed things.

When you go to install the new Y! Messenger, and it defaults to TYPICAL INSTALL, it says RIGHT THERE that it will install the following items (by default):
Yahoo! Messenger with Voice
Yahoo! Toolbar with Anti-Spy and Pop-Up Blocker
Yahoo! Extras.
It also gives a description of each of these items. Below that is a couple of check boxes that reads:
'Make Yahoo! my browser's default search engine' and
'Make Yahoo! my Internet Explorer home page'.

You can even uncheck these two boxes at the bottom if you want. How novel of an idea!

If you go to CUSTOM INSTALL... it will show boxes for EVERY ITEM and will allow you to check/uncheck EACH AND EVERY ITEM except for the Yahoo! Messenger with Voice box. This even includes the Desktop and Quick Launch toolbar shortcuts which can be checked/unchecked.

MOST programs will usually install a default set of items, which includes lots of items you don't want or need, and won't even tell you what items it's installing. The BIGGEST contributor to this is MICROSOFT. Half of their programs don't even offer a custom install (except maybe for installation location), and just proceed to install anything they want.

At least Yahoo! Messenger tells you what is going to be installed by default and gives you a choice to not install certains items (even in the TYPICAL INSTALL) and a even greater choice in the CUSTOM INSTALL.

Comes as no surprise

Yahoo got burned in the past for setting market prefences to yes, you think they would change? What gives Yahoo the right to change your computer settings? Don't spyware change your homepage and computer settings? Then I guess Yahoo's messenger update install would be considered spyware or at the very least maleware.

I noticed Yahoo's sneaky install a few months ago. It comes as no surprise they do this. Companies that do these sort of tactics I try to use as least as possible.

Yes, spyware does change homepage and settings, but without your knowledge. How can Y! IM be considered spyware if you have the option to uncheck those setting being changed right there on the TYPICAL install page? All you have to do is READ instead of just clicking NEXT!

Anybody wants to talk about spyware and malware, all they have to do is look at Windows. You do a Windows Update, and it changes all sorts of settings to use Microsoft's software instead of that which you had set things up defaults for. Media is changed to play in WMP from whatever player you used to have set up, without permission, and without even asking!

So, which is the actual spyware or malware? Y! IM or Windows???
