Yes there's opportunity for some applications to live in the network space, a la Sun's old vision of "the network is the computer". I definitely love GMail, for example, because I can retrieve my mail and files from anywhere.
But in the end these network apps won't replace the local desktop, they will be an adjunct to the desktop.

- I have changed from IE to Firefox and Mozilla and love it. It is so refreshingly new and very user-friendly - what a change from IE. I will never go back to that idiot giant who does not care if anyone likes it or not. Firefox really gives you control over what you want and what you see. I am going to tell everyone I know about it.
