Ludicrous remark of the day: new regulations = commercial suicide!
by June 13, 2006 2:56 PM PDT
I'm nominating Jim DeMint for his aspersion that new regulations would lead to "commercial suicide."

The current state of net neutrality has led to the greatest value-creation machine in the history of the world: the unfiltered, democratic Internet.

Allowing a duopoly, which controls app. 98% of all broadband access in the U.S., to tamper with that value-creation machine -- without adequate regulatory controls -- puts America's technological leadership position at risk. And, by extension, its national security posture.

The solution: 4 years protect period and then net neutrality

Just like in pharma industry. The battle should be about the protect period length. Competition is needed as investment return to telecom companies. This is good compromise I think.

Something has to be done

Being stationed in South Korea, I use Skype to keep in touch with friends and family back home. It's proven to be a very reliable and high quality means of communication for me. That being said, I would like to relate my experience trying to use this technology to talk to my sister, Skype to Skype (computer to computer) in Houston TX.

It's important to know that she has SBC Global DSL (owned by AT&T), and I'm using Samsung DSL here. whenever I try to talk to her skype to skype, we constantly get disconnected every 2.5 to 3 minutes, but if I'm talking to my friend in Austin Skype to Skype, I can talk for hours with no problem. On the other hand, when I use Skype to call my sister's telephone, I have no problem getting disconnected.

This leads me to believe that AT&T is dropping the Skype to Skype connections due to the fact that it is in direct competition with their long distance service. I could be wrong, but when my sister contacted tech support about the issue, their reply was that there was nothing wrong with her DSL connection, and that the issue had to be on my end.

I've proven that the problem isn't on my end, and if they say that there's no problem with her DSL connection, then why do we get disconnected like clock work every 2.5 to 3 minutes?

I would be very interested in knowing if there's anyone else that has experienced this problem with SBC Global or AT&T. If so, please respond to this post.
