More Bush morality issues, not thinking clearly
by August 16, 2005 8:32 AM PDT
Objecting to XXX rated material isn't going to change the fact that it's out there, being viewed, and is a part of day to day living. At present these sites and information are mixed into the fabric of the internet. It makes sense to pull it out of the mix into it's own category. Every town tries to do this, they might have a "seedy" area where strip clubs and porn shops exist, but these same places aren't mixed into neighborhoods.
The fact that Bush objects to XXX material isn't going to change anything. Wouldn't it be better to have this information easily identifiable? You could simply restrict all .xxx sites from schools, work, etc. Right now, a simple typo takes you to smut. Try www.whitehouse.com as a prime example. Isn't this the site you'd think of for the Whitehouse?

does not matter who is in the House, White or that multicolored other one on the Hill. Same everywhere. Liars, cheats, thieves, and crooks.. pure and through, with the black heart of a criminal. Just look at that fat ass womanizing drunk, and murderer, Kennedy! Look at Kerry, a total liar. All the same. Only thing worse nowadays is a child molester, and some of them are this. So.. Your idea of the xxx being made into a reality and keeping it all together is good. I agree. As for the rest, well.. we would be better to return to the pre Boston Tea Party days. Taxation without representation. What does it matter? We will not make it as a species beyond 50 years.

The Bush bashers didn't bother to read the story first. I guess government responding to the people is a bad thing.

.xxx is a silly idea anyway, just like .aero.

The XXX domain is a no brainer for limiting access
by August 16, 2005 8:51 AM PDT
I don't understand what the hoopla is all about. Right now, families and kids have no real way to filter out porn. With the XXX domain, filters and parents could simply limit any access to any website that ends in xxx.

Didn't you see the other comments about how the porn promoters plan to keep their non-.xxx domains as well?

All this new domain gives them is the chance to use the names of existing web sites for pornographic purposes, for example ibm.xxx wouldn't take you to a site where you'd get help from IBM.

Since they have no intention of leaving the .com and other existing domains and there's no checks to keep them from using the new domain to mock others, there's no valid reason for them to have a new domain of their own.

Finally, something on which the US and the UN can agree
by August 16, 2005 8:51 AM PDT
It is important to note that ICM Registry has recommended the ICANN board wait until September to deal with the .xxx TLD in light of the political winds blowing from the Bush Administration. Mr. Lawley is taking a business-like approach.

The problem is that the noise is not driven by business or even social concerns. It is political and reason is a weak weapon in that battle.

Odder still is that it is the .xxx TLD that has caused the UN and the US -- at odds over just about everything, including the ownership of the Internet -- to partner. Strange bedfellows, indeed.

Voluntary??
by jabba August 16, 2005 9:18 AM PDT
The .xxx suffix will be approved.
My gripe is this:
"We're focusing our attention on the Department of Commerce and ensuring that we're building this as a voluntary (top-level domain) for responsible companies," Jason Hendeles, founder of ICM Registry.

It should be mandated that all pornographic sites be placed under the .xxx suffix.
I know. What is porno to me might not be to you. I'm talking the obvious porno sites, we can quibble about the 5% that may or may not deserve the .xxx suffix later.
Sure would make filtering out porno much easier if it's all at .xxx

xxx extenstion
by azell August 16, 2005 9:24 AM PDT
Silly, this administration. Putting porn sites under xxx will help those who wish to block such sites will have an easier time than if the sites are as they are now -- .com

And, don't tell me that some of those yelling haven't looked at some porn site. How would they know what a porn site looks like if they haven't seen one. It is not a case of "I'll know it when I see it" situation.

Now Bush in charge of the Internet?????
by pictureyourride August 16, 2005 9:29 AM PDT
I voted for him and still agree with many policy issues but, this ranks right up there with Algore inventing the Internet.
.xxx IS a method of Protecting Our Children and those who choose not to not to view such material.
You CANNOT eliminate this material from the net Mr. Bush. With this you can at least provide some more protection for those who need it !

Take a minute and think...

The arguement that a .xxx domain would have any influence over the number of websites of Pornographic nature is absurd. The Christian Right, or whoever gets off on censorship should take a minute and think. If a .xxx domain comes into existence, Parents would have the ability to block all websites with that suffix. If anything those seeking to keep children out of the realm of digital smut should be pushing for all pornographic websites to have that extension.

.xxx domain makes sense
by August 16, 2005 10:38 AM PDT
I agree with a previous statement made, pornography has been around for years and creating an .xxx domain is not legitimizing it, rather it is attempting to control it which, I favor as a parent. Currently pornography sites are using the .com domains and probably some others and it is hard to filter these sites out. If the .xxx domain name was used and laws were enacted that ALL adult content sites were to use this, you could literally set filters up on your home routers and prevent any .xxx site from coming up. To me as a parent this is an easy and simple way to control content such as this.

It's not going to be required
by joezeppy September 6, 2005 5:40 PM PDT
That's the point Nate. It would be easy if it were required but it is not going to be required so your filtering idea can't work and will only serve to make it more confusing for people to filter out porn.

This is a faulty plan with a great idea being used as a ruse to get it approved.

Great Idea

Force all XXX sites to conform with it and there can be software made to block these sites. Otherwise, there is no way to block them.
