Like the others who responded, this law isn't confusing or unwanted as the writer of your story seems to imply. Prerelease piracy is theft, no confusion there at all. And finally, what a wonderful thing that I can actually hope to someday rent or purchase a DVD and watch it with my family, having gratuitous profanity, nudity, and violence filtered out. I've given up renting or seeing new movies the past 5 years, instead waiting for them to come on network tv, so I can watch them with my family. It seems to me nobody's business what I do in the privacy of my own home, I don't see why anyone would be against a law that permits me to see a filtered version of movies, like the writer of your story seems to support.
IMHO This shows absolute greed and financial pilfering from the American public, and yet the same public is oblivious about it. After the copyright timelines were extended so that the movie and music copyright dates did not expire (so that "they" can continue to make money), now they can go after any suspected P2P file swapper with impunity. So where's the public outcry? No where ... the American public, in large part, do not care as long as they get their "stuff" anywhere and anytime, no matter how much they have to paid overall.
After the complete success of the RIAA to hold anyone financially and criminally hostage for song swapping, and at the same time, continue making money off the public in droves, the American public is basically convinced anyone involved with P2P is a criminal. This is the capitalistic and democratic way of life that we live in, which I believe is counter to what the innovation and ingenuity spirit were supposed to be promoted when patent and copyright laws were originally created.

As if the rest of the FREE World cares much about the laws he signs or not. He can not enforce it even in his own country, never mind elsewhere. Thus this law is no more than an other far-th in a bucket. So, I take it as a joke only while laughing my head off how illiterate are the lawmakers and political figures including some of their law professors. What a naive bunch of money hungry "would be dictators". Sometimes I wonder what kind of banana-boat they came on into this world. They look like using money instead of admission exams in higher education. Do they?

The more laws Bush and Company pass relating to file swapping, movie downloading, etc...the more that activity will originate offshore, in countries where the law does not apply. It's very simple to log onto a website hosted in a foreign country and download movies...pre-release or otherwise...music and software. These laws really accomplish nothing more than to increase file swapping, in my opinion. I am not a file swapper myself, and never have been, but if I were, it would be very simple to do it by connecting to websites hosted in a foreign country. However, I do agree that this law is sound, as pirating pre-release movies is truly stealing. Despite that, this law will not stop it. Once there is technology out there making something possible, it will happen no matter what. That's just the way it is.

This law is completely out of line, for starters I cant afford a TV let alone go to the movies ($10 per person at the local theater $5 for a large drink and $3.50 for a small bag of popcorn and then there is gas to get there) I can?t even afford a nice new computer most days, and cable TV is way to expensive around $50 and for what the same crap day in and day out with no intelligence to be seen.
I don't buy DVD?S, CD?S and certainly I don't go to the movies, so were I ask you were is the potential for a sale for who ever this group of jack ass?s are with a nice shiny new car with the nice shiny new house, and with the nice pool and patio furnishings walking around with the Rolex on his wrist. Heck I?d be lucky to afford a Timex which I don?t have because I cant afford it because the price of milk and bread are way to high in this country and taxes are eating me alive.
What really ****?s me off is not all the money I have spent to go to and can?t afford to pay back college ?just to teach my 1st year networking class cause the teacher was uneducated? because I?m stuck working **** ass jobs for just better than minimum wage which is also to low even after the wage scale is done increasing next year. What really ****?s me off is that all the jobs are going over sea?s to India and other paces so corporate America can get out of paying taxes and then there is the **** in the entertainment industry with way to much money crying about how little bobby only six years old down loaded an mp3 off the internet and then demanding little bobby pay a grand or better or daddy goes to jail, **** off Lars Mr. ?I do it for the fans not the money? you and people like you are exactly what is wrong with America and the rest of the world and that is my opinion.
I remember back when I was a kid is grade school learning about the entertainment business and what not and what sticks out is the beginning of it all when and entertainer was lucky to get a nickel for a nights performance and they were thankful for that!
Greed is going to be the downfall for the lot of you! As for me I?m happy with the peace and quiet in my life, I don?t buy any of the crap you produce unless it?s playing someplace and I can listen to or watch it for free!
Welcome to life its not just and American thing we are poor all over the world

This isn't about stopping piracy or any of that crap that the government says it is trying to stop, this is about money. The government is trying to keep the people under control. By making file sharing illegal they are saying that if you can not afford to see a movie in the theater then too bad wait for the dvd and if you can not afford to rent or buy the dvd then too bad wait for it to come on tv and if you can not afford satellite or cable then too bad you will never see this movie simply because you do not have the money to see it.
These laws aren't protecting movie companies in the least. Movies (good movies at least) are affect very little by piracy. Here is my point. The Dark Knight is the top most grossing movie of all time. I in fact saw the movie in theaters three times. That's three times I spent money to see this film. Now I'm sure there are people out there that downloaded it and watched it while it was still in theaters but I am also sure that those same people also went to see the film in theaters.
I don't think Christian Bale has any trouble making his house payments because a couple people may have pirated one of his movies. Sure that's someones hard work but if we are going to charge people for copying a movie why not charge people for quoting some one? I mean its the same thing. You took someones words and applied them to your life. Shouldn't the person who came up with the quote first get a check every time that quote is uttered? If we are going to call it a crime to copy a movie then why not call it a crime to quote someone? After all aren't you just "Stealing" their words for your own selfish reasons?
