Comments on: Hail to the 'coder in chief'

Libertarian Party candidate for president Michael Badnarik wears his geek credentials as a badge of honor. But is he a Mac guy, a PC guy--or both? Hey, it's an election year.

Badnarik is the real deal
by July 22, 2004 8:17 AM PDT
The Libertarian Party may not have done well in past elections, but is anyone really excited about voting for Bush or Kerry? They've teamed up to give us war, the Patriot Act, and a 30% increase in federal spending in the past 4 years. Anyone interested in protecting individual privacy, reducing the role of government in our lives, and working toward a peaceful world and a prosperous free market economy, should vote for Libertarian Michael Badnarik instead.

He seems far smarter than the options

I'm impressed by the intelligence and thought that obviously has gone into his answers. Bush and Kerry don't seem to be doing so well at giving straight answers these days.

Freedom to break the law...
by David Arbogast July 22, 2004 10:09 AM PDT
Badnarik will never win, and doesn't stand a chance. I don't say that because I disagree with all his views, I say that because at any moment, our government can throw him in jail. For crying out loud... FIRST you get elected, THEN you work to make changes. Hey Badnarik! Your personal views are not a valid defense when you break laws that were approved by the majority. When will the libertarians every run a real candidate instead of a criminal?

Badnarik has refused to file tax returns with the IRS, has said that top IRS officials should receive "indictments for fraud," and has collected numerous tickets for driving without a license because he refuses to be fingerprinted for one

Voting Libertarian is now the best option
by July 22, 2004 10:35 AM PDT
Voting libertarian is the best option at this
point in history. Why?

Libertarians have worked hard to provide the
voters a consistent, workable,
small-government choice for over 30 years.
The Libertarian Party has presented
candidates who do not want political power
over you, who do not want to make your
choices for you, and who do not want to make
a career of politics. Libertarians can and will
say NO when it counts. It's a matter of
principle with libertarians. As proof that we're
different than all other parties and
candidates... Libertarians have turned down
hundreds of thousands of tax dollars for their
campaigns. Winning is important, but winning
through the use of FORCE is winning
nothing... it's a loss.

But I have to vote to keep XXX out of office?

Voters must not continue to fall for this
argument. It's a very deliberate tactic used by
both parties to scare their own partisans into
not straying, and to insure that only the two
parties can effectively compete. Voting for
someone you dislike and don't trust because
you dislike and distrust someone else even
more is a recipe for disaster. When you vote
for the lesser of two evils, you will always end
up with evil.

So why not vote for a different third party other
than the Libertarian Party?

The Greens have 200 members in office,
while the Libertarian Party has 600 members
in office, which is more than all third parties
combined. Libertarians also ran more
candidates than all other third parties
combined times two! They have also have the
presidential candidate on all 50 state ballots
in the last three elections. No other party has
done this.

It also may be argued that Greens are a "left
wing" party, the "Constitution Party is a "right
wing" party and the Reform Party has no idea
since they nominated Ralph Nader as their
candidate. The only credible choice for small,
limited government is to vote Libertarian. No
other party offers YOU to make the decisions
on your life.

He's also a Constitutional scholar who has been teaching classes around the country. He understands "limited government".

I had the opportunity to meet Badnarik when he visited Knoxville three weeks ago. He is genuine and speaks with clarity. I have some pictures online. Email if you are interested in seeing them.

I believe everybody would vote for liberty if given the chance. I feel that voting for the Libertarian Party is the best way to achieve this goal!

I'd vote for him...
by unknown unknown July 22, 2004 7:56 PM PDT
If only because he doesn't seem interested in appeasing special interest groups like the GOP and Democrats are. Also as a Computer Science student I think it would be good to have president with some insight in the tech industry especially considering how pervasive the internet has become.

Vote for special interests
by July 23, 2004 11:33 AM PDT
Mr. Badnarik has made it quite clear, he is not the candidate for special interest groups, but rather will represent the special interests of 285 million individuals. The interests are explicit; individual life, individual liberty, and individual property rights.
You May Be On to Something Big
by July 22, 2004 10:15 PM PDT
Mr. McCullagh,

I think that you may be onto something big. I
checked out Badnarik's website and he appears to have growing support and a busy schedule. I then looked at the Alexa web traffic rating and his site's rating is growing while Nader's has slipped. I then noticed on the Amazon.com presidential candidate donation page that Badnarik's contributions are building while
Bush's have stalled.
Also I learned in an article in Barron's that
Badnarik will be on at least four state ballots so far where he will be the only alternative to Bush/Kerry: Texas, Arizona, North Carolina, and Indiana. It along with a recent article in the Los Angeles Times predicted that he will receive the largest percentage vote ever for a Libertarian candidate for President.
It will be interesting to see how his campaign unfolds. I hope that you will write about him again later in the race.
Thanks again for an informative article.

The time for the LP is now
by steveth22 July 23, 2004 5:47 PM PDT
I've recently taken a second look at the LP. The Libetarians have come a long way since being started by a bunch of Ayn Rand fanatics in the 70s. They are now offering serious solutions to serious problems, and are fielding candidates that are intelligent, thoughtful, and politically savvy.

The Demopublicans have not offered us any truly new solutions for about 40 years. Both of them are DEEPLY in the pockets of special interests, and there's no way they are going to give up their multi-million dollar contributions or their pork-barrel paradigm. It's time for a BIG change, and the Libertarians are finally ready to help us out of this mess.

I can't wait to vote in November!
by July 25, 2004 6:54 AM PDT
I met Michael Badnarik at the Illinois State Libertarian Convention earlier this year. The man's intellect is truly amazing yet his message can be assimilated by anyone with average intelligence. That is a tremendous advantage for the party. Also, if any of our current members of Congress were required to know the Constitution the way Michael Badnarik does, I doubt that 5% would be in office today. Let's face it. They didn't read the Patriot Act before voting to pass that piece of garbage legislation which is proof positive that they don't know the first thing about the U.S. Constitution or the Bill of Rights.
