This would be true if it was incompatible
by eddddd89 February 2, 2007 9:17 PM PST
This is just a stunt by Apple. Itunes works fine on Vista. Therefore, MS cannot have made it incompatible.

It is not compatible if....
by ralfthedog February 3, 2007 8:52 AM PST
It is not compatible if you are running DRMed music while logged in as a normal user (bad idea running any operating system as a super user) on a fully patched system.

DR-DOS, remember?
by Ilgaz February 3, 2007 3:16 AM PST
It was documented in court that Windows 3.1 update has broken
DR-DOS compatibility.

It is a common thing MS does, it is not "zealot" or "fanboy" thing,
they do it even for Windows-only software/companies.

You are kidding, right?

Seriously, Apple writes a crap software app and then blames MS for it not working when the new version of windows comes out? Thats crazy and they would (and do) say the same thing about 3rd party applications for their OS.

Note to the Apple's, Intuit's, and Electronic Art's of the world, IF YOUR PROGRAM REQUIRES ADMIN RIGHTS TO RUN IN WINDOWS, IT IS CRAP! You should compensate every user's computer your software is installed on which have been infected with the various worms, trojans, viruses to run your crummy programs. Fire some developers, maybe the ones you keep will wise up and write some good code which complies with the MS API. If not, write your apps for the legacy OS's like OSX and Linux

Just because the software does not require SU rights today...
by ralfthedog February 3, 2007 8:57 AM PST
Just because the software does not require SU rights today, there is no guarantee that Microsoft won't change things so they require SU access tomorrow.

I would not even hold that against them. Any new OS has security problems. When you find that a function or class can give you root access, you need to isolate it from non privileged users.

Wrong-
by mikezav February 3, 2007 8:21 AM PST
Apple can't be at fault on this one, Microsoft never released
(AGAIN) all of the code to make most main stream applications
work without issues...

They don't have to release any code, just the API kits which explain how to write applications which won't crash and which will work in future versions of Windows. Would it make sense to release an OS which purposely breaks 3rd party apps? Maybe that is how Apple does it, oh wait, do they even allow 3rd party anything?

it isn't amazing that some major applications don't work...

Itunes is garbage and requires unnecessary access to parts of Windows to run. Hire some better developers, Apple!

This is typical MS incompatibility issues, if you want to blame
anyone for MS Vista and iTunes not working together all nice
and happy, you don't have to look much further than Redmond...

Why, did Apple move there?

Apple does not HAVE to support Vista.
by Solaris_User February 3, 2007 8:44 AM PST
You guys act like Apple HAS got to support Vista, they don't, ever.

If they choose not to that's perfectly fine. Right now there is more of a Linux market out there than a Vista market, IF a Vista market emerges and people actually want to but and use iPods with it Apple may decide to support it.

iTunes for Linux, excellent!!!!
by ralfthedog February 3, 2007 9:03 AM PST
I run Macs for desktop work and Linux mostly for servers, however I do run some Red Hat desktop systems (More by the day). iTunes would be great for them.

PS. I do run a windows computer for games (Never for work)

Or, how about waiting a few weeks before using iTunes
by Scott Gardener February 3, 2007 10:46 AM PST
Don't get me wrong; I appreciate Apple, and I may soon be getting my wife a Mac. We've each got iPods. But, to postpone a major upgrade because of one program compatibility is a bit much. I fully expected some programs to have issues; that's why I kept a separate XP partition to continue using, in case of circumstances such as this.

But, to those who just use a computer and aren't into partitioning hard drives, one can always upgrade now and just wait a few weeks before using iTunes again.

But, I'm sure Apple welcomed an opportunity to poke at Microsoft and make it look like it's their fault. (It's not like there aren't better nits to pick, like that whole Windows Millennium Edition thing. I'm sure that helped sell a lot of early iMacs.)

Which company do you work for?
by afriendof77 February 4, 2007 3:11 PM PST
So I can stay as far away from your company's software as possible. If you are in charge with your lack of 1st hand knowledge and speaking as an authority I would never buy anything from the company you work for and I would hope most others wouldn't also.

Vista lacks the extent of native drivers of XP...
by fred dunn February 5, 2007 7:44 AM PST
Not just because XP has been out longer. When I performed a compitibility test against my system it did not recognize several of my peripheral that have been out for years.
Microsoft just needed to get Vista out the door so it could get revenue not matter what the inconvience to the end-user or enterprise.
Why do you think they already have SP1 scheduled? It's to install all of the components and drivers that should be shipping with it now.
Don't EVEN think about blaming the peripheral companies as Microsoft made writing anything for Vista a moving target.

Not quite true
by rapier1 February 5, 2007 8:34 AM PST
Microsoft does *not* write all or even most of the drivers. If a
company does not provide MS with proper drivers then its much
less likely that MS will write them itself. So if you want to blame
someone for your hardware not being supported you should
complain to them, not MS. This is why Nvidia is catching a load of
crap lately - because they didn't provide good drivers to MS in time
for the launch.

Vista = Disaster

Vista is a Disaster of incompatibility.

In the days since its release the general sentiment amongst
industry professionals is that Microsoft got this very wrong.

Vista
by rgganong12aol.com February 15, 2007 7:11 AM PST
I was foolish enough to download iTunes on my brand new Gateway laptop with Vista software. It took out my CD/DVD drive. I called Gateway and after being on hold for 30 minutes (toll # call), they told me to take it back the store I bought it from because it was new enough to get replaced. I then called the Microsoft Vista support number on the website. They wanted 59 dollars from me to fix the problem (the website clearly states 90 day free support, I will return it but I am majorlly disgruntled and will never call Microsoft support again, if I can help it!
Apple+Crap Software=CrApple
by ITman67 February 7, 2007 1:37 PM PST
Really?!!!! Wow Apple! Try not to be too obvious when it comes to slowing down the sale of Vista!

Fix YOUR problem with iTunes APPLE! Sure you sold over 90 million iPods, but almost 80% of those sold are to Windows users! Who's losing out now Steve Jobs?

Vista = Joke
by tecknokid578 February 10, 2007 10:24 AM PST
If you are so upset that an APPLE based program did not allow your APPLE ipod to connect to the new vista operating system than go buy an APPLE computer. Vista is just a clone of tiger anyway.
Microsoft to Windows users: Don't switch to Mac
by cary1 February 8, 2007 2:21 PM PST
I am sure MS can come out with this one too... just think about it. Windows Media Player 10 and 11 don't work on Mac, PlayForSure doesn't work, Zune doesn't work, Windows Mobile can't sync with a Mac....

So don't switch to crApple... that's my slogan
