DR-DOS compatibility.
It is a common thing MS does, it is not "zealot" or "fanboy" thing,
they do it even for Windows-only software/companies.
Note to the Apple's, Intuit's, and Electronic Art's of the world, IF YOUR PROGRAM REQUIRES ADMIN RIGHTS TO RUN IN WINDOWS, IT IS CRAP! You should compensate every user's computer your software is installed on which have been infected with the various worms, trojans, viruses to run your crummy programs. Fire some developers, maybe the ones you keep will wise up and write some good code which complies with the MS API. If not, write your apps for the legacy OS's like OSX and Linux
I would not even hold that against them. Any new OS has security problems. When you find that a function or class can give you root access, you need to isolate it from non privileged users.

(AGAIN) all of the code to make most main stream applications
work without issues...
They don't have to release any code, just the API kits which explain how to write applications which won't crash and which will work in future versions of Windows. Would it make sense to release an OS which purposely breaks 3rd party apps? Maybe that is how Apple does it, oh wait, do they even allow 3rd party anything?
it isn't amazing that some major applications don't work...
Itunes is garbage and requires unnecessary access to parts of Windows to run. Hire some better developers, Apple!
This is typical MS incompatibility issues, if you want to blame
anyone for MS Vista and iTunes not working together all nice
and happy, you don't have to look much further than Redmond...
Why, did Apple move there?

If they choose not to that's perfectly fine. Right now there is more of a Linux market out there than a Vista market, IF a Vista market emerges and people actually want to but and use iPods with it Apple may decide to support it.
PS. I do run a windows computer for games (Never for work)
But, to those who just use a computer and aren't into partitioning hard drives, one can always upgrade now and just wait a few weeks before using iTunes again.
But, I'm sure Apple welcomed an opportunity to poke at Microsoft and make it look like it's their fault. (It's not like there aren't better nits to pick, like that whole Windows Millennium Edition thing. I'm sure that helped sell a lot of early iMacs.)
Microsoft just needed to get Vista out the door so it could get revenue not matter what the inconvience to the end-user or enterprise.
Why do you think they already have SP1 scheduled? It's to install all of the components and drivers that should be shipping with it now.
Don't EVEN think about blaming the peripheral companies as Microsoft made writing anything for Vista a moving target.
company does not provide MS with proper drivers then its much
less likely that MS will write them itself. So if you want to blame
someone for your hardware not being supported you should
complain to them, not MS. This is why Nvidia is catching a load of
crap lately - because they didn't provide good drivers to MS in time
for the launch.
it kept telling me my computer was not authorized to play the music.
In the days since its release the general sentiment amongst
industry professionals is that Microsoft got this very wrong.
Fix YOUR problem with iTunes APPLE! Sure you sold over 90 million iPods, but almost 80% of those sold are to Windows users! Who's losing out now Steve Jobs?

- I am sure MS can come out with this one too... just think about it. Windows Media Player 10 and 11 don't work on Mac, PlayForSure doesn't work, Zune doesn't work, Windows Mobile can't sync with a Mac....
