Free?
by nmcphers March 22, 2007 9:43 AM PDT
Are the videos and movies on the site going to be free? If not, they are not targeting YouTube are they? That would put them in competition with iTunes and Amazon Unbox, etc. If they ARE going to be free, then aren't they going to undercut their sales in iTunes and other places? Their goal is quite unclear to me.

Yes

My interpretation is 'yes' because the article said ad-supported.

It seems like these companies just want to have greater control over their content. They can find the advertisers to bring in the money they need, they can control video quality, they can control how videos are linked, they can promote their own programming, etc. Really... it's as if they're creating a new network. They think they can handle it.

They said in the article that the TV Shows will be free but that there will be a fee to watch the movies.

User experience and distribution partners are the keys to success

At first I thought this was a dumb idea...just like when the record labels decided to launch their own music site to crush Napster. But this is different.

NBC and News corp. will use MySpace, AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft, and others to distribute their video. Don't you think MySpace, AOL, Yahoo and Microsoft will do everything possible to make this attractive, build a huge audience, and crush YouTube? NBC, News Corp, Viacom, and others know who their friends are...and they are all too happy to help.

I see 4 or 5 big challenges to making this work but they have already solved one of them...partnering with MySpace, AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft for distribution and traffic.

For details on the other challenges see my blog http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_next_big_thing/2007/03/nbc_and_news_co.html

Google has changed the Internet more than any other company.
When they move they make big waves.

Really?

Maybe Google has changed it, but wouldn't have been able to do that if Microsoft wouldn't have helped "create" it and bring it to the masses.
