It isn't need for TiVo either

TiVo has had web based scheduling for a few years now, via TiVo Central Online on their own site. And last year or so they did a similar deal to this one with AOL. TiVo's online scheduling has the advantage over ReplayTV in that RTV has a blackout window of over a day no matter what, while broadband connected TiVo's check for requests every 15 minutes so there is only a very short blackout. Dialup TiVos have the same limitation as RTV, as is the nature of dialup.

The reason this is newsworthy is ease-of-use. Integration with existing tools is important. There are many people who use Yahoo TV's features, and now they can seamlessly have their TiVo record things using the same tools they already use. That's a usability advantage and a marketing edge.

Video quality
by alansegal November 7, 2005 9:07 AM PST
The quality of video at Google/Yahoo/CNN/etc or any of the VOD services is terrible. Haven't these companies learn't anything yet - to get a subscriber base they need to provide atleast Cable/Satallite TV quality of service and without waiting for the video to download to watch. Who has the time to download a program!

Check out the article 'The future of TV' and see what EdgeStream has developed.
