Gaudy ads coming to Google? No thanks
by rcrusoe December 20, 2005 7:47 AM PST
I've been a loyal Google user for many years and have always
thought their text ads were an excellent idea. They are non-
intrusive when I need to find info quickly, but they are there
when I need them.

If Google starts crapping up their pages with gaudy ads, I'll just
block them. If they get fancy and try to go around my ad
blockers, I'll just turn off all Google graphics or start using other
search engines.

This is nuts. Google already won the gold medal - why would
they want to have it Bronzed?

Good thing Firefox has AdBlock

That'll help keep Google fast. One small banner ad takes as much bandwith as the whole rest of the page.

NOTE to Google...I will pay to NOT have to look at ads!
Google goes public and stops being Google
by Dachi December 20, 2005 8:29 AM PST
Public companies have one motive and one motive alone, more money.

Every day from the day google went public, they have become just a little less google and a little more corprate.

Graphic ads is a _huge_ step away from the direction of the former google.

They are raking in millions and millions of dollars on text ads but and their stock price is something insane like $450 but it still just isn't good enough.

Why? Well with a public company there is no such thing as "good enough"

They don't want to do one thing and do it well, they want to be Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, eBay, and Walmart combined now.

I totally agree

Why am I starting to like Google less and less? Exactly because of the dynamics that you describe: "they have become just a little less google and a little more corprate"

But as we all know, this is a slippery slope type of effect. The "little more corporate" that we are seeing will more and more become a 'lot more corporate'.

As Bill Gates said, Google is now the "darling" like Microsoft used to be, but I believe their days as the darling are numbered.
Corporations
by KilljoyNTT December 20, 2005 9:05 AM PST
I believe there is a law concerning the director of a corporation having a direct responsability to turn a profit at all costs.

It's illegal for them to do anything that would result in the company having less money, like donating to a charity, etc.

Unless of course it could be claimed as 'advertising' (like as a publicity stunt.)

Endless economic expansion is unsustainable, too bad capitalism refuses to believe it.

Google Experimented With This Before:
by BMR777 December 20, 2005 9:30 AM PST
Google has experimented with graphical adds before. They didn't do it on the main page, but I saw them popping up all over the place on adwords sites. Then as suddenly as they started, they stopped.

Anyway, I have two words for the new Google Ads: Hosts File!

I already block 95% of ads on webpages using a custom hosts file, which works in IE and FireFox.

Ads Suck

Try Gigablast
by KsprayDad December 20, 2005 1:59 PM PST
I use Google with Firefox Adblock and Customize Google.

If this starts not to work...

Try Gigablast...the fellow that runs it has a great story and the searches are excellent.

Ultimate proof about the Media Hype/Hoax around Google
by 207495111267145837975635436522 December 20, 2005 2:10 PM PST
If you had any doubt that the Big Media and Google are together to create this ultimate Hoax that Google is the best search engine for us, this deal between Google & AOL should put it to rest.

How can the people not see that there is something totally wrong when Aol-TimeWarner-CNN
keeps reporting on how great Google is as a search engine and (in return) Google hands over to these same Media sources Billions of dollars in cash and stock.
Talk about reporting/news Hoax.

So it is all hopeless? Is there not a search engine that we can actually trust that it is working for us rather than for Big Media?
The answer is yes there is, it is called AnooX.
www.anoox.com
Because it's search results are optimized by the Vote of the people (that is us) and because it is not-for-profit.
My hats off to AnooX.

Oh well, I guess better get ready for one more feature article in Fortune or another Aol-Timewarner publication about how great Google is!
Not :)
