This trend seems to be across the board, even true of niche websites catering to ethnic communities (Example GaramChai.com: http://www.garamchai.com).
Logic is simple for advertisers: Exposure = higher sales = higher revenues ; and for the web-portals, Exposure = higher clicks = higher revenue
