" For one thing, Yahoo stands to make a fair amount of money out of this, and that's money that can be invested in search, search advertising,"

No go.
Why would yahoo invest the money they make from google in search though? Way I see it, if this deal is in place, Yahoo wil have a very strong impetus, NOT to strongly compete with google on in search, because the more money google makes, and the more dominant google gets, the more money yahoo will make from the google/yahoo search deal. Why would yahoo go flat out to try and beat google in serach, when they are making money off google's dominance search? That's the crux of the matter. All this "non-exclusive" crap is just an attempt to hoodwink everybody into going to sleep, and allowing this anti-competitive monster to be created. The DOJ are not that naive or stupid.

Yeah but ya gotta remember. They very publicly and rightfully convicted Microsoft of anti-trust violations, and did nothing. Google or Yahoo just needs to figure out which wheel to grease and the government will go away.

Maybe the investigation is par for the course to avoid future scrutiny.
