Ultimately its about who produces the content, You wont be surprised the emerging hype and all google thingy will be obsolete within a quarter time of AP's history.

i disagree. the power lies not with the producers but with the distributors. google's core service is to act as a filter for the infinite ocean of news and information available on the internet. by making it easily accessible, they become a key channel for traffic, and the more traffic they have, the greater the value of their ads.

good quality journalism is still a highly sought-after commodity, but consumers have neither the time nor the will to spend hours trawling the web to find it.

dismiss google at your peril.

This would be a good opportunity for Google and the print news industry to co-fund a not-for-profit investigating journalism foundation. Both Google and the print news partners would agree to fund the foundation on an ongoing basis, each contributing some portion of the advertising revenue it generates from the display of the news items produced.

That would keep Google fed with high-quality content, and would take some of the pressure off of new print companies to be the solitary source of funding for their investigative journalism efforts.
