If you really look at what Google is developing from a 100K foot level it is really innovative. It is a very large, decentralized, robust social network cloud platform.

Its just hard to see when you look at individual offerings from them and there are gaps in the network so far.

the next thing that I would not like to do is wash my linen in public. Frankly why would I want to share my personal info with Google? So, that they can really target my tastes, preferences etc. and sell this mushed info to advertisers. Targeted advertisements in the new avatar from Google. Ain't it?

Cloud computing, social networking etc is a big baloney. Who cares if I know a ton of people on the social sites and care two hoots about m y family. Right. Let me get this straight, I prefer my family and friends and talking directly or over the phone is more traditional and personal for me.

@nixermac: Then you're not the target market. Problem solved. Geez, it's like complaining that you don't see the point of a Kindle because you don't read books.

For those of us who do want to maintain a searchable online identity and presence, this is a great way to "jump the line" in Google results. I've completed my profile and already I'm listed on page 1 whereas in the past I was buried way down after many pages due to sharing the same name with significantly more well-known businessmen.

I suspect that social networking for a lot of people is rather like the phone during an earlier time--amazing new technology that lets you keep in touch with people even when you're not face to face.

With regards to online rep, i use a people search site called http://www.yasni.com. It basically shows you any mention of you online and doesn't just hide it, but you can delete it by asking etc - i didn't even know half the stuff i found through it was public!
