Most people miss the big issue here. The larger a company gets, the slower and more political it all becomes. Just like in "Nacho Libre" - it's is all political. I am sure there are plenty of smart people at yahoo, but their voices get squashed by bigger flies and maggots.

the size of the company can be less of an issue if you allow the user the flexibility to tailor their experience. of course yahoo is going to try to monetize the user experience, but in the end, if the user enjoys the experience, they'll continue to use these types of services.
