For makers of widgets--modest little pieces of software that let people do things like play games, annotate photos, or send "pokes" to each other on Facebook or MySpace--it seems the buzz has turned to a worrisome hush.

Thank you, Stefanie, for this story, and Charlene for your contribution. What a breath of fresh air. I hope the tide truly is turning on social networks to provide more useful applications. The potential is enormous and nearly untapped, so it's good to see it finally start to happen. My company, CircleUp, is thrilled with this trend and excited to be a part of it! Thanks again!

Widgets are the fad right now and there's probably a bubble with social in general. Its here to stay but we'll have to see what survives and in what format. I believe that businesses will really benefit the most from social and the use of widgets.

Following up on Navin Chadda's quote in this article, I'd like to point out that Netvibes, my employer, has released more than a year ago a multiplatform and open-source API: the Universal Widget API (UWA) works on Netvibes of course, but also iGoogle, Apple Dashboard, Vista, Live.com, Opera, iPhone, MySpace, blogs, etc...
