- After six years as a network admin, I had considered becoming a Java developer (I took a few graduate programming classes). Then, I realized that I don't have what it takes to be a programmer- I'm not speaking of ability, but of drive. IT sucked the soul out of my body. I'm working at a university now (making less, of course, but I'm not nearly as stressed out as I used to be- and I actually have time to pursue my passion, which is music. I think the important thing to remember here is, if coding is your passion, then go for it. If you want to be a video game developer, then go for it! We can't be happy in life unless we actually DO something that makes us happy. I was making a LOT more money than I'm making now, and I was totally miserable!!
