Still Using Windows 98
by rtot September 1, 2007 2:17 PM PDT
Hah! ... I have a "geek" brother who is still happily using a Windows 98 PC with enough processing power under the hood to make him happy, and a line-up of measures to make it quite secure. - - - He has totally skipped a couple of upgrade cycles, ...and I'm camping out on XP for a good long time. - Linux may be up to speed for the average user's desktop by then. ... Hah!

Me too

Sounds good. No need for me to upgrade my personal computer just yet; not enough bandwidth available where I live to justify ugrading the hardware, and all the "protection" hogwash being added makes upgrading for the multi-media capacity pretty stupid.

Updates Don't Drive Use
by cconsaul September 1, 2007 7:59 PM PDT
The only thing that will ever drive use for the average consumer is being able to transfer the operating system to another computer if we decide to upgrade, or < horrors > replace the hard drive. Microsoft is getting more fussy than Apple (Which Gates also owns a large portion of) and all it is really going to do is to encourage us to embrace the learning curve of Linux. Then again, maybe someday the Window maker will find a way to own that too?

It really is a shame that Bill Gates was never as far sighted with his software as he was with his marketing. We might have been spared the 640K barrier, the resident memory lockups, and now the non transferable operating systems. The only thing it never seemed to prevent him from doing is making money. I understand that he is now making great strides in the field of philanthropy. What a shame he does not show the same compassion for his humble customers!

Owning Linux

MS has already started to own Linux with the help of Novell and the others. It's just a matter of time.

The author should note that the small image at the very beginning of the article is a screenshot of one of the very early of Vista builds, probably of the longhorn series, with the Slate theme. If you are going to show Vista, you should probably fix that.

Why upgrade?

Why do we NEED to upgrade for some eyecandy and security fixes that most businesses have worked around anyway? Their own firewall setup & policies?

It's too costly
by john262 September 3, 2007 9:41 PM PDT
Why would I want to fork out my hard earned money for Vista when I can get a perfectly good Linux distro for free? Plus if I did run Vista I'd have to pay even more money to upgrade my computer, yet my PC already has sufficient resources to run most any flavor of Linux.

I thought that one quality of a good OS was that it can run with few system resources, but with Vista they turned that on it's head and require more, not less. That's just crazy IMO.

Not to bash Vista & Service Pack comments
by JTowner September 4, 2007 10:07 AM PDT
But until there is a good reason, I'm sticking with XP.

Now the big issue is MS is very dependent on WindowsUpdate - before broadband was in every home and such, Microsoft put out Service Packs on a regular basis - 13 for NT3.51, 6.1 for NT4, 4 for Windows 2000. Now that everyone is expected to use WindowsUpdate, Service Packs are held back due to the "do we have to?" question. Last time I checked, Windows XP has 72 updates post SP2 - way too many to install independent of a SP in my opinion.

Just because Vista has a Service Pack doesn't change how people view the OS - requiring current (new) hardware with 2gb of RAM for your standard desktop user.

High % users have a webcam, but Vista forgot about them
by Ratbiter November 15, 2007 1:51 AM PST
Many of us have Webcams, but Vista seems to have forgotten all about them. It boasts that it is the cutting edge in communication but has forgotten about an important tool used in that communication.

I even went out a brought a 4th webcam, one that says Vista compatible on the box, guess what, it wouldn't install, even after downloading the latest driver from the makers webpage (had to do this myself as the software that came with the webcam kept saying I wasn't connected to the Net.)

So Yes Vista maybe bigger and better, but at what I've yet to find out :(
