Software Assurance Program a crock!!!
by mike.gw July 21, 2007 3:41 AM PDT
SA is nothing more than Microsoft's efforts to guarantee revenue upfront. They use the fear of paying potentially higher software upgrade costs to sell this "insurance program" that guarantees upgrades with a 3 year cycle. Long gone are the volume license discounts that businesses once negotiated.

There was no compelling reason to rush to upgrade your corporate network clients from Win2K to XP, esp if you had the perimeter secured with firewall, antivirus, spam and central workstation management. There has been no compelling reasons to upgrade Office ever since Office 97. Microsoft knows this, but like a good monopoly, they use their dominant market position to secure your revenue upfront, without showing you any potential value.

Say NO to Software Assurance! Teach Microsoft to earn money the old fashioned way... by showing us the value of upgrading their products.

If you simply do this in XP:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run...
3. Type "winver", and hit OK

You would see that XP is Version 5.1 *******.

Ubantu is the Canary attempting to break wind and be heard in a hurrican of PC reality here in the real world. Though Linux in general is making leaps and bounds, let's keep it real. Reality says that in general, Linux is near obscurity in comparison with the "establishment." Windows is still the workhorse of the Enterprise, business, and personal computing platforms.

Apple owns the lions share of the "other" or non MS operating systems -- Besides, Linux is UNIX anyway and I sure am tired of listening to the shrills out there clammering how original Linux is -- It's just an open source version of UNIX that will not make a real dent in the market for quite some time.

Wanna get something really done and communicate in the business world -- Looks like Windows will dominate (realisically) for quite some time. Want to use a premium system, use Apple hardware and software, want to use the fringe, use the open sorce UNIX called Linux and really see where that really gets you... (Not very far).

As for the Linux Canaries breaking wind in the hurrican of reality -- Careful not to blow out your ***** too much. =;o)

Only 3 Years and still 10 years behind OS X
by pisceandelusions July 22, 2007 9:52 PM PDT
I think it's hilarious that Microsoft is going to attempt to put
together it's next unstable, bloated, aging and most overhyped
product of all time - Windows, version 7 within 3 years.
Whenever it gets here, it will still probably be about 10 years
behind Mac OS X.

I feel really bad for anyone who is still brianwashed or just too
stubborn to give the Macintosh a fair run, because it really is a
far superior machine in so many ways, there really is no
argument.

Every time I have to sit down on a Windows machine, I am
constantly reminded of why I choose to use Apple products and
have continued to do so for the past 12 years.

Go ahead and keep using your Windows, it helps people make
lots of money when they have to repair and troubleshoot your
equipment. I'll stick with Apple.

How can you be so ignorant?
by whizkid454 July 23, 2007 6:21 AM PDT
This new version is supposed to be a complete redesign of the OS internal code. How can you say it's 10 years behind OS X when it could very well be three years ahead of it once it's released? Keep your mouth shut until something happens.

Too Arrogant
by Mister Winky July 23, 2007 9:16 AM PDT
Count me as someone who started with Apples way back in the day (Apple IIe, baby!), but never liked the Mac platform. Yes, I PREFER Windows over OS X having used both extensively.

I often recommend Macs to family members and friends because I do think that they're easier to use for many people to use and keep secure, but the Mac interface doesn't resonate with me and the hardware, while nicely designed, offers limited choice.

If you really think that there are no smart, experienced, computer literate people who simply prefer to use Windows because they like it better, you are blind and arrogant. If Macs were so obviously superior, they would have more market share than they do. Wake up.

apple over windows
by morrie 52 July 26, 2007 8:17 AM PDT
The reason why I and countless humans and others(countem)that the defacto market leader is windows with that comes competition to produce cheaper product more games,I personally prefer apple but add previous comment but price and verying products wins me,all a bit like vhs and beta the best product lost.

by DarwinOs April 4, 2008 11:51 AM PDT
I have OS X tiger and XP Pro and SUSE UBontu& Fedora. They all have pro's and con's I like windows cause of the fact that everybody develops for the them and linux for the security and really makes you learn how to use an OS. and mac for it's simple yet challenging interface. only thing I hate about my mac is that everything is MAC MAC MAC it's gotta be there way or well just there way..

Heeee eeee !! Drrrrrrrrrr!! Dop!!
by EricoDeBegeraque April 15, 2008 9:36 AM PDT
Heeeemmmm! Dop! You are wrong... Windows Vista (an XP too) is not comparable to MaxOS X ...

The OS kernel of Microsoft is really really more technologically powerfull than the MacOS X Kernel... And not just a little!!

10 years behind Mac OS X... We always see ignorant people telling that kind of stupidity!! Dop!! Microsoft have the must powerfull OS kernel on the maket actually since Windows NT 5...

When a company own 90% of the market this is surly because it do wrong!!!

A little sarcasm here...

Also ... I don't understand your point about troubleshooting equipement... Equipement is not the resposability of Microsoft!! This is true that MacOX hardware is of best quality but ... Microsoft Windows have to deal with a bunch of esolteric hardware brand and it do well!! This is not the responsibility of the Windows OS if people put cheap hardware on their machine that cause hardware isue...

Also this is ot really the responsability of Microsoft if the hardware companies do bad device driver...

HO yeah ... Apple have not these problems...
If you try to install a legacy hardware on your Mac what will append? ... Ho ... it will not work Ho... If you decide to buy a special hardware to manage somthing on your Mac and ... Ho it will not work or you will have to write your own device driver... Ho ... hmmm but it will work on my windows XP/Vista machine...

You can try to hit the head of microsoft... Try to destroy the reputation of their OS ... but the fact is microsoft own 90% of the OS market because their OS are the most powerfull on the market and the most accessible on the market.... But you are right... The graphical user interface of the Mac OS X is cute...
It has to be 10 (X!)
by Joshxy July 23, 2007 12:03 AM PDT
Obviously, because this year + 3 years = 2010.
So M$ will surely continue their copying the MacOS game by
coming out with Windows X.

MuI7......... Vista Driveby/MS Heart Bypass Operating System
by amanfromMars July 23, 2007 3:51 AM PDT
If it is not a Optimised Virtualised Operating System ..... Running S.M.A.R.Ts. in AI Seventh Heaven, Global Communications HQ Earth Simulation, it aint gonna be Current ....for Power Players and that will render 7, a lemon.

In other terms, if the OS is based on any State of Persistent Memory rather than being Reliant on Excellent Imagination, it will not be good enough.... for such are the Current development fields for Future Mobilised and Mobilising HPC Needs and Feeds.

Would Microsoft like to deny that Publicly ..... or can they confirm IT with further clarification and explanation?

It is not about Nike shoes, it is about shoes !
It was always about a TOOL, not a branding.
I learned it from a Wall Street banking brander Asian-American
working for a real HUGE world wide banking emporium.
It is BRANDING..., the business model is about branding.
And branding and quality are divorced in the progression of
American socio-cultural values.
I would put my head on the pike if the American Nazi Party
headquarter computers would be using Apple PC's or....even
better, regular cloney PC's with Linux/GNU OS. That would not be
the right-wing SUPER AMERICAN branding that the neo-nazis
here need. They need Windows, OF COURSE !!! and if I could
sneak in their headquarters, that is what I would find.
Sooo, GIVE ME WINDOWS OR GIVE ME DEATH !!!
(an american patriot)
A pat on the back, that is all MS got for being such nice boyz
after the review of their Anti-Trust case that lasted 5 long years
and was resolved THEY ARE A MONOPOLY WITHOUT A DOUBT...
keep it up boyz~~~
The pat happened in Bush's gov't but it could have happened in
our next president's gov't - Mrs. Clinton.
It is all in the SYSTEM. built-in like with computers

I got an iMac G5 in 2005. Now it's a doorstop,
other than Final Cut, it was worthless. Regretted the purchase the first hour I got it. Say bye to the backspace key - copying files over files in another folder (appending) OSX has never heard of it. Windows is't perfect, but it gets the job done.

Too Soon
by thedreaming July 23, 2007 1:18 PM PDT
I really think they should concentrate on making Vista the workhorse that XP is now. Everything under the sun runs under XP and once vista is the same, then they should make a new os, but it's just too soon for '7'.

{yawn} How original. Suprised you didn't also find some asanine way to include the "M$" spelling into you pointless comment.

If you're a Mac user then go play with your Mac and try to find something usefull to do with it, same goes for you Linux users. Otherwise, every time some Mac/Linux fanboy user interjects some retorica comments into a discussion thread about Windows it only proves how insecure those idiots are about their bad choice in operating systems. If those OS'es were so great they wouldn't have to spent half their time trolling the web trying to prove it.

subscription model
by poordirtfarmer July 26, 2007 6:40 AM PDT
? considering a subscription model ? You can bet they are! Microsoft will eventually attempt to manipulate the marketplace into accepting a subscription OS like a utility service (Like monthly garbage pickup & sewer). I?m sure they?ve got lawyers and dreamers scheming up something sinister right now. This way they?ll not only get the latitude to put on our machines exactly what they want, but they?ll be insured of the huge annual revenues to which they?ve become accustomed, and with no need to actually create something new of sufficient value to entice sales. If revenue is dependent upon creativity and added customer value, they will soon be in trouble.

For goodness sake, then how could what?s-his-name maintain his 400 ft (or so) luxury super-yacht.

Desired features in Windows 7
by bluemist9999 August 2, 2007 9:01 AM PDT
Keep Vista's improved security. Remove the mandatory DRM, and streamline the OS so it runs well without eating 512 MB of RAM while idling.

Of course, out of these, only #1 is likely. #2 is politically as likely as pigs flying, while #3 would require removing or at least disabling certain features by default.

More likely, the DRM will be extended to control more hardware and prevent unapproved software packages from running without popping up a lot of warnings. They'll add more features, gobbling up more RAM.

Personally, I think Windows XP is the best Microsoft OS there is. Even when it first came out, it ran pretty well with existing applications.

XP is good. 7 needs to be AMAZING.
by jcolletta275 October 19, 2007 4:35 PM PDT
I agree XP is the best Windows yet. Since I upgraded to it, I haven't had the desire to return to any older version, nor do I have any desire to upgrade to Vista.

7 needs to be everything Vista was SUPPOSED to be but wasn't AND MORE. Microsoft needs to show the world they're committed to innovating, not just building on yesterday's technology (which is what every Windows except NT has been to date). If not, it's nothing less than more empty promises and pseudo-vaporware from Redmond.

the quality bar
by West11 October 6, 2007 11:29 PM PDT
the thieves at Microsoft haven't hit the bar for '98, 2000, ME(millions of errors), XP or Vista. As matter of fact they gotten less close on each attempt except Me, which didn't meet any standards--not unacceptable. Can we depend on their promise not release 7 until it hits the bar? If so, then there will not be any new MS OS in the future because based on their track record they've consistently failed.
