The figure was cited as proof of an increasing shift to digital media in most computer users' lives.
While significant, the sales point to a rapid slowdown in adoption of the new operating system. Microsoft had observed that it sold 20 million copies in the first month, which doubled XP's achievement but now indicates that the average number of copies sold has been cut in half during March and April.
The firm has so far declined to compare its most recent figures with the relative size of the market today or to any decline that may have occurred during XP's 2001 release.
Although heavily anticipated, Vista has been plagued by sporadic issues with missing drivers or incompatible software that have caused hesitation in some buyers.

TELL US ALL THE FACTS CITIZEN GATES.
The PC people have spoken & they do not want Vista until all the bugs are worked out & they can afford to upgrade all their equipment & peripherals & download patch after patch after patch to get it to work like XP does today...
Why upgrade at all?
After that, the OEM just starts shipping their PC's with Microsoft's products pre-installed.
Many don't want Vista as it's still so buggy and thus request that WinXP be pre-installed as well. But Microsoft doesn't look at those numbers, they just count the number of licenses sold. But those sold were mainly to OEM's in the form of a bulk license and thus no actual shipments out of Microsoft's factory, just a piece of paper with a list of serial numbers for each OEM.
They do however ship their products to some fo the retail stores in boxes marked "Vista".
But here too, Microsoft counts them as they go out their own factory door on their way to the Retailers. But the retailers store them up and sell them to the general public.
So maybe CNet should go around to all of the major Microsoft outlets and ask how many they've actually sold to the end user and I'm sure you'll end up with a much smaller number.
Some of those retailers buy blocks of 10,000 at a time (to get the best price) even though they're currently selling less than 20 per day at present. They know that in the future, once SP1 and SP2 come out for Vista, that their volume will increase eventually in the future.
So why doesn't CNET to a poll of the largest Microsoft retailers to find out how many they're shipping per month from each biggie. If the biggie totals don't come anywhere near what Microsoft claims, then we'll know for sure how much wool Microsoft is trying to pull over our eyes.
There's no doubt that they're pulling wool over our eyes... it's just the amount that we're unaware of.
I doubt what they say is actually anywhere near correct. But then again, Microsoft is known to exaggerate the truth on numerous occasions.

Everything else is complete hogwash. The only reason
Microsoft is spreading misleading information, is to try
