Monopoly
Now, maybe SOME of you might begin to understand the TRUE
meaning of a monopoly.

Microsoft does not own DELL, HP, or any of the retailers. Yet
they have affectively cut-off user options across the board.
Anyone who has been around knew this is exactly what was
expected. But maybe, a few of you will finally gain some
comprehension over the ramnifications of this type of behaviour.

Have a nice day, especially if you're no longer tied (hook, line,
and sinker) to Microsoft.

So...
Microsoft should have to offer you and old OS? They don't have a right to offer what they want?

Wow I didn't know business was supposed to kiss my arse and do whatever I want. I want to get rid of fuel injected engines and go back to carburetors so that I can work on my car again, is that the car companies' fault?

Use Ubuntu it is easy to install, has tons of packages ready to go, and the most friendly, helpful user forums of any OS I have used. And I have used many Solaris, Sun Java Desktop, BSD, Dos 5, 6, and 6.22 every version of windows, but never MacOS strangely. There are options for an OS, therefore there is no monopoly, only lazy consumers who use what they are comfortable with.

So "Choice"!
Microsoft Management is running scared because of Apple and
the up-and-coming Leopard release. You can have your "cake"
and eat it too with a Mactel machine and one or all of the
"virtualization" options available today. Windows OSes run better
on the Mactel boxen. And many of the Windows apps run
without the Microsoft OS on Macs using CrossOver and/or with
Parallels, any OS from anybody will run on a Mac as well.

Choose one, choose all - but the thing is when you go Mac, you
have it all.

We are riding the Apple Tsunami and really enjoying the ride.
Hang Ten!

Running scared?
You realize people running Windows on a Mac will still have had to buy that copy of Windows. I don't think MS really cares if you're running Windows on a Mac because that is still a sale for them. Apple is doing a great job with OSX but the fact is that they control every aspect of the Mac which is the only way to get OSX. Apple is an upper-end hardware manufacturer which focuses on high profit margins and this is very successful for them. However, because they are upper-end, the cost is a lot higher for the average user which is why there isn't massive uptake. MS might be scared if Apple was to ever release OSX for other hardware but that's not very likely and for good reasons.

I would also suggest to goto Distrowatch.com &#38; check out the newest version of this distro based on Ubuntu...but with all the bells &#38; whistles that Canonical won't put on their versions. Just came out yesterday or day before.

In with the new out with the old
Don't make such a big deal about it. People buy new hardware and software to keep up with the times. It's an evolution in technology. This is why you don't see many people using IBM XTs running PC-DOS anymore.

There is absolutely nothing in Vista I need.
Windows XP works perfectly well for me.

If my car works perfectly well, and does everything I want my car to do, why would I replace it?

Same goes for Windows XP. I'm perfectly happy with it. I don't know a single person who wants Windows Vista. By packaging Vista in ALL new computers, the industry is basically forcing the public to take on Vista. For most people this won't be a problem, but others may be in for a headache.

Tough choice for the industry. No choice for the public.

I Mostly Agree
I have Windows Vista running on a new HP with Intel Core 2
Duo, 2 Gig Ram, Dual 250 gig SATA Drives, Ethernet to DSL
behind firewire and router on a network of boxes that run
Windows 98, 2000, XP and a bunch of Macs.

While Vista is a nice step from XP here are my experiences:

1) Core OS is SLOW.
No other way to put this. Vista core features are slow, slow,
slow.

2) UAC
User Account Control is a good idea but its implementation is
annoying. There is truth to those funny Mac ads on the subject.
OS X is both more logical and more secure in its implementation
comparatively.

3) Media Capabilities
Vista's media capabilities are first rate on this box. Great
implementation right out of the box. Excellent, However, the
copy of Window Media Center edition I have basically has all the
same features.

4) Internet Explorer
The new tabbed browsing is great, but it is still IE full of all its
troubles -- Firefox any day.

I give Vista a C overall.

Overall, I still prefer Windows XP to Vista. I think after a service
pack or two from Microsoft, Vista will shine more brightly. For
an OS with advanced visual features, I would still choose OS X
over Vista.

Again, however, XP still reigns supreme for me on my PC boxes.
I like 2000 for its simplicity.

Here's one good reason
Geez, not one good reason for buying Windows Vista?

What a limited mind you have. Could it be that you are like all the other drones on this site, only capable of criticizing Windows Vista, like a fraternity boy who feels the pressure of saying certain things, only against certain people or against certain groups?

Say it ain't so!

What I find so amusing on this site is the consistency and conformity of opinion in universally hating Microsoft. Is it because Microsoft is such an inferior product?

If that is so, why do so many people use it?

Oh, let me guess, it's all because they are universally stupid people and only you - the truly brilliant and magnificent ones - can truly understand what is right and virteous in this world. The rest are peons, mental midgets.......people without a clue, only you, with your Hitler like superiority - can truly see and understand the real values in this world.

What does this reflect?

It reflects the mind of the stupid 18 year olds who write most of these reviews on bulletin boards. There is not a lot of difference between Hitler's values and yours.

William Golding wrote about this mind set best in his novel, "Lord of the Flies."

That's what we see over and over again in these hypercritical, monotonous sites, "The Lord of the Flies.'

Someone get me a flyswatter.

What a Rant! Don't Speak for Me.
Hey man, don't generalize me and DO NOT CALL ME AN 18 year
old.

I am a 42 year old business owner who has made my life via
technology for the past 21 years.

I criticize Microsoft, and a lot of technology companies, because
they subscribe to the same mentality of so many companies in
America -- they make garbage, use marketing to convince the
masses that garbage is good and then acquire brilliance and
dump it down to incremental versions so as to hook customers
for life.

Your statement--
"Is it because Microsoft is such an inferior product? If that is so,
why do so many people use it? Oh, let me guess, it's all because
they are universally stupid people and only you - the truly
brilliant and magnificent ones - can truly understand what is
right and virteous in this world."--

deserves this answer -- Yes Microsoft DOES build an inferior
product. For sure. So does General Motors, the worlds largest
car company until right now when Toyota passes them.
Microsoft copies, impersonates, intimidates and bullies
developers and yes the Masses follow because frankly our
population loves wealth and fame -- the wealth and fame of our
corporate leaders.

It is funny, but ironically you weakly attempt to use social critical
theory to deconstruct this entire forum when in reality true
social theorists know that this deconstruction is best applied to
social power, not minorities, such as this forum. For it is the
socially powerful who set the tone, inspire mediocrity and
promote blind followers.

Do not reduce me to an 18 year old. I shall not accept you
attempts for I am not a sheep, but a thinker.

I rail against Microsoft because they deserve it. Yes their
products are generally junk, not because I say so, but because
the competing choices simply offer more, for less. If you have
not bothered to learn this, then that is your cross to bear, your
OS to use. That is your choice.

I claim this right to speak my mind -- I am a minority in my
viewpoint and I invest a great deal of my life in actually
analyzing my viewpoints, not in just "buying a microsoft box
because they are cheap or easy, or as you might claim, the best."

Obviously you see these viewpoints in these sites and for good
reason. We are the people invested in this stuff enough to
actually care, analyze and write about these topices.

The rest are either:
1) using their OS until it breaks and then either getting it fixed
or buying a new box,
2) using what companies tell them to,
3) or they could care less about these topices.

I have used Vista -- Have you? Do you own a copy? Mine is
running here in my office on a brand new HP with Intel Core 2
Duo -- it is, well, mediocre. I would rather rely on XP right now
or Mac OS. I would still take Linux for a server OS.

I resist your flyswatter.

People don't use Windows (Vista or XP) because it's the "best"
They use it because it is cheap, available and, almost exclusively
the only OS offered on consumer based computers. Try going to
BEST BUY and asking for Linux machine - they'll just look at you
dumbfounded.

Saying more people buy Windows because it is best is specious.
If people were interested in the "best," as opposed to the most
affordable, Porsche, Mercedes and Ferrari would be out selling
Ford, Toyota, Nissan, et cetera. Without contradiction Porsche,
Mercedes and Ferrari are much better cars in all aspects than a
Ford Focus, yet people buy Ford Focuses. People buy (a) what's
offered to them, (b) what their friends use and (c) what's
affordable. And they do it, whether they have to sacrifice
performance or quality. For most people, even in business, IT is
seen as a expense, (when it really should be viewed as a profit
center), so they buy the cheapest machines that work. Even Mac
uses buy more Mac Minis, iMacs and MacBooks than they do Mac
Pro's and MacBook Pro's, because they are cheaper and will do
what the user needs.

Oh, and you violated Godwin's Law by mentioning Nazi's. The
analogy is even apt - choice of operating systems compares to
someone who committed the genocide of 35 million non-
combatants, as well as contributing to the death of scores of the
citizens of his own country and sacrificing his entire military? I
think not...

Not until my current PCs die
I used to be one of those geeks who hit the PC store the day a new version of Windows came out. Not anymore. Over the years, the idea of draining my wallet to upgrade my system to meet the ever-growing resource requirements to run Windows got old. Rather than fatten Bill's wallet now, I'll just keep running XP until my current PCs die and then go from there. I'm a search marketer and, at least at present, XP is sufficient.

Besides, Microsoft ALWAYS needs a couple of years to work out some of the major bugs in new versions of Windows.

The benefits of Vista over XP SP2 are...
...none. OEM's are already backlogged with inventory they're having trouble pushing out &#38; Microsoft's retail boxed copies are selling even worse. People have become more savvy in approaching this Windows downgrade cautiously. Not only has Joanna Rutkovska shown that Vista's kernal an easily hackable "joke", but other respected experts like Bruce Scneier have written in that bastion of Wall Street, Forbes, that the DRM technologies embedded in Vista not only slow your computer down, but far worse, don't play legitimately purchased DVD's &#38; CD's. Very few software programs work on Vista (Microsoft's included) as well. Vista SP1 the Godsend alleged to fix all this garbage will miss the Xmas 07 sales year in the bargain.

All of this nonsensical hype (like the title of this article) is for naught - history will show Vista to be looked back upon as tho it were Windows ME Version II. So far as XP's alleged "obsolescence", I think not. XP SP3 is due early next year &#38; that'll do just fine as consumers keep an eye on the developments at Apple and Google for their next operating systems when needed in a few years time.

A beauty
Thank you for your comments. I have yet to read anything that makes me really want to down load Vista. If it weren't for the $400 price tag, I'd consider the hot shot business edition. But for a better graphics screen, IMHO, it's a waste of money.

so long XP, hello Intel-Mac
By the time I need to replace my computer it will be with a Mac with Windows installed to aid the transition. My son, a hard core MS tech type, made the change and found he almost never uses Windows anymore and his computing life is much easier. I had Vista Beta and don't think it's worth the upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate; the only version with (functionally) more than eye candy. Maybe a landslide won't happen but I think MS will lose a good percentage of their customer base. Without their mickey mouse upgrade structure and rediculous pricing maybe I wouldn't change. I wonder what MS brainiac thought that up?

Myths about Upgrading
I was lucky enough to be on the technical beta for Windows Vista for over a year. I would just say it's been the most problem free update with my current hardware that I ever had. All of the comments mentioned about extended hardware requirements things that don't run, and reasons not to upgrade did not really ring true for me. It's obvious that there are a lot of Anti-Microsoft people who haven't given the product a chance or even embraced the change.

While there is always a price for change, this one is less than the upgrade woes in the past to Windows XP or Windows 2000.. Drivers aren't as big an issue. Neither is compatibility. I keep hearing about system requirements and performance, which claims I have just haven't seen as having any reality at all.

It's a great piece of work, one we should all be happy about..

Apple fans vs global warming
Apple fans reminds ne a lot about the anti-global warming folks. They represent a mere 4% of the PC users, yet claim, often hysterically, they are the-ones-who-know-it-better, that everything beside Mac is crap. Why the hell do they need to be so vocals? Why don't they let the huge majority of folks use their windows machines, while they enjoy (and worship, whatever)their Mac, quitly? Are they just insecure with their choice? I think so.

Drivers - They will still be there
I've read several replies concerning drivers. Most are claiming drivers will no soon no longer be available for XP. Wrong! Microsoft does not write the drivers, the hardware manufacturers write them. How long will they write drivers for older OS's? I can still find new hardware and make it work with Windows NT and depending on the hardware, even with DOS (most notably network cards). Given that I can find drivers all the way back to 15 years ago, I'm not all too concerned. Just how long are you going to own your computer before replacing it?

The Thing About Vista
Well as a prior OS X user who switched to have more games XP for me has been a bit of a trial. Overall it seems older and more primative than OS X. So I've been waiting for Vista hopeing for something similar. I upped my RAM to 2 gigs and bought a new graphics card in preparation for my Gateway 700XL 3.2 ghz. Now it sems that not only is it not quite the same thing but it also has trouble with some recent games ( ie. Battlefield, 2142, Fear etc. ) in using their 3D surround sound ( EAX ). My friend's daughter also uses her ipod ( iTunes ) with my machine which I understand doesn't work yet with Vista. So I'm frustated and hesitant to proceed. I know that the drivers for my 3 year old sound card will get out of beta ( for Vista ) sometime and that generally the games will either grow old or they will have a fix for them. But this is frustrating! A new OS that isn't really ready for primetime. OS X handled this very well with it's OS 9 layer. MS should have come up with a better scheme for backward support. The thing is I notice that Vista users who don't play a lot of games or use applications that are affected are saying " What's the problem ? " Where as if you use your computer for stuff that will run into these issues people are saying " Not so finished is it? ".

Vista Express Upgrade ends 15th March
I'm surprised the most obvious reason for XP rapidly becoming scarce since the launch of Vista is that the Vista Express Upgrade offer ends 15th March (in the UK at least), so retailers will be keen to ditch remaining XP-running machines and not re-order new machines with XP.

This is simply because after 15th March, they can't offer a cheap upgrade path to Vista any more, so the value to the customer of any XP machines sold after that date will drop sharply compared to ones with Vista pre-installed.

How the article missed this is utterly beyond me, but there again, it is C|Net with their lazy journos, so I shouldn't have expected any better really.

Returned my first Vista HP desktop
My hard drive died last week, so I needed to buy a new computer. Since my MS Natural Keyboard is almost new and my Kensington Expert Mouse (Trackball), Gateway monitor and HP printer are all functioning, I thought I'd just replace the CPU. Couldn't find destktops with anything but Vista. The monitor was fine and I was able to get an updated MS driver for the keyboard, but Kensington doesn't have a Vista driver for the trackball yet. The real problem was the printer. I found a spot at the HP Website that hinted that I would find a driver for my printer to work with Vista, but that was a red herring. Had an interactive chat with HP Tech Support, who said that there is not a Vista-ready driver for my printer, but they have a workaround. I followed his instructions and was able to print (but not scan) with my all-in-one. I soon realized, however, that my CD/DVD drive has no longer recognized. So 72 hours after purchase, I took the machine back to Best Buy. They verified that the drive did not work and plugged in a drive from another PC. That one didn't work either. They figured the driver on the hard drive had gotten corrupted - probably by the HP printer work around. They took the machine back. At first, they were going to charge me the 15% restocking fee - I didn't care; I wanted it gone! - but they relented and gave me a full refund. As the article indicates, there are limited options for people who don't want to go to Vista yet but need a new computer. As if it weren't bad enough that my hard drive died; now I have to figure out how to get everything working again, not just the hard drive.

Limited only by our Imagination Hope everyone reads this
Americans have become prisoners of their own apathy and ignorance of history. And I blame many senseless deaths, injuries, and the monopoly of Microsoft on THEM!

What has injuries and death have to do with Microsoft?s monopoly? At times technology has presented measures if used could have save lives and prevent injuries, but due to politics, intimidation, and people?s refusal to stand up and take action. The technology that could save lives and prevent injuries is tossed aside for fads, trends, and what is forced upon the population by the ruling forces. Remember those in power are given that power by the people.

These actions are the very cause as to why Microsoft has a monopoly, and why there is no choice. We have a choice, and we have technology and the means by which it can be implemented. The only thing stopping us is the division and apathy of the general population. Wake up people. Get mad. Do something now. Would it kill a lot of you to pick up a piece of paper and pen? Would it kill you to make a telephone call? How long does it take to send a few dozen e-mails out? Start thinking for yourselves.

And for those who say ?My vote don?t count? or ?It doesn?t matter how the people vote.? You better think again. In Michigan there was a law that passed that allowed 18 year olds to drink for trial period to determine what effect it would have on the population. When it came up for referendum and to make the law permanent, it failed and the drinking age returned to 21.

Because of the enormous outcry, demonstrations, and a few riots at universities across Michigan, an independent study was conducted that found less than I believe it was 18% of those 20 and younger voted and if only 25% of those age 20 and younger had voted they would have retained the right to drink. 25%!!!!!!!!! Not an enormous number. So wake up and get out there and voice your concerns before it?s too late and we loose all of our rights to free speech, to vote, and the rest of our freedoms.

Kensington says they won't be making a Vista MouseWorks
When I found out that there wasn't a Vista specific verions of MouseWorks, I wrote them to see what they were going to do. I got back a response saying that Vista performs all of the functions that MouseWorks did, so they weren't going to offer a Vista compatible version. They also said that the top two buttons would work with Vista and that there was no way in Vista to program the buttons using application profiles like you could in XP. Oh, and that you weren't to even try using MW v6.22 in Vista. I guess Kensigington.

However, I did find an artical when I searched for "Kensington ExpertMouse Vista" indicating that after the software was installed that the person was able to point the mouse driver software to the directory that the download file was expanded into, and "all" of the trackball's functions worked, but I haven't tried this. When I tried to install the software all I got was a Rundll32 error.

I guess if you want a fully functional four button trackball that is able to emulate keystrokes you need to look to someone other than Kensington, as they no longer want to compete with Microsoft in the Vista areana.

Good luck.

Correction.
Make that the top two buttons would NOT function.

It looks to me that Kensington doesn't think the top two buttons or the keystroke emulation features are important.

Workaround for Kensington Expert Mouse under Windows Vista
A workaround is at least possible. Install Microsoft IntelliPoint 6.1 driver for XP &lt;<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/Download.mspx" target="_newWindow">http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/Download.mspx</a>&gt;. Indicate that you have a Microsoft Trackball Optical. Next, install X-Mouse Button Control tool &lt;<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm" target="_newWindow">http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm</a>&gt;. This will allow remapping of the Expert Mouse buttons. The top left Expert Mouse button is seen by X-Mouse Button Control as
the middle button. The top right Expert Mouse button is seen as the "left x" button. I found part of this solution elsewhere on the Web. --Mike &lt;mailto:spam@cogit.net&gt;

Don't believe the Vista hype. I have never been so upset or frustrated with software in my life (and I was writing in assembly language since the days of the 4k 4-bit processors). I have a master's in electrical engineering and I have had to jump through incredible hoops to get the simplest of applications to work right on Vista (things that the average Joe would have no hope of getting to work). Even apps that are supposed to be Vista compatible crash frequently. What a joke. It makes me even madder that Microsoft is holding the world hostage now and pushing their trash onto everyone by bribing their sales channels to push this garbage. I have disliked Macs all my life, but it's hard to support a company like Microsoft with such poor products and shady business practices. For the first time ever, I'm considering switching.
