Comments on: Microsoft limits Vista transfers

Retail buyers of the OS will only be able to legally transfer the software once. After that, it's back to the store to buy a new copy.

C YA BYE Microsoft! BYE BYE!!
by pghwill October 21, 2006 8:02 PM PDT
After spending thousands of dollars on Microsoft OS software and computers over the years, this has got to be the icing on the cake! Microsoft you have really pulled a wildcard here! If you continue with this policy and dont change it, I will gladly use Linux variant or SUN Solaris from here on out! Windows XP will be the last Microsoft product I own, that is if you Microsoft can change your EULA! If you dont change your EULA, then it will be your eulogy! Just my thoughts should someone from Microsoft read this!

That's Why I Boot Up Linux Every Chance I Get
by kd6dm October 21, 2006 10:47 PM PDT
Microsoft has lost touch with publlic relations with the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification"...and now this with Vista. Screw Aero, Mandriva 2007 already has it. Linux rules.

Reformatting issues ?
by Jonms83 October 22, 2006 10:27 AM PDT
So,... If I were to purchase vista (which it seems now I won't depending upon the answer of this)

If installed, and 3 years later I contract a virus and it wreaks havoc, I reformat, and then what? Do I have to purchase another copy of windows?

What if it's not a virus, but just a lot of spyware, and I want my computer to run faster? Am I screwed?

I've reformatted my XP machine like 4 times, there's no way i'm buying vista if this is the case.

This is the part of the EULA that stinks....
by fred dunn October 25, 2006 1:20 PM PDT
For Paul Thurrott, What part of "one time" don't you understand?

15. REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE.
a. Software Other than Windows Anytime Upgrade. The first user of the software may
reassign the license to another device one time. If you reassign the license, that other device
becomes the ?licensed device.?
b. Windows Anytime Upgrade Software. The first user of the software may reassign the
license to another device one time, but only if the license terms of the software you upgraded
from allows reassignment.

This is directly from the Vista EULA.

This is no longer true

I think it is irresponsible for Cnet to post this as the first item on the Vista opinions section because Microsoft has since revoked this restriction.

Vista

If the object of a virus is to lower thruput, slow down redirect or completly deprive applications of resources and compormise security the question remains, Do we consider XP and Vista an OS or a really big virus with a spiffy GUI?

Linux is closer than you think
by Chi7 December 25, 2006 10:04 AM PST
I have setup linux GRUB bootloader, allowing several OS options, the current choices are XP-Pro, Xandros 3.03 Business and SuSE 10.0, Suse being the prefered OS, Xandros is a easy windows clone, will setup a bootloader and read write to NTFS partitions and reliably run MS office applications with minimal CLI intervention, it will cost you about $95.00 and has integrated firewall and AV but for me it"s just too much like windows. SuSE can be downloaded for free from novell or many mirror sights world wide. SuSE will also auto install non-destructively repartition and install the GRUB bootloader, and it's free. you could be playing with linux in less than two hours, which I strongly recommend. Novells documentation is outstanding and downloadable. My hardware: AMD K-7 @ 1.16ghz, 1gb DDR,2-160GB ATA's, nothing special, its been bullet proof over a year now, just play with the CLI once you know it youll love it, Happy commands!

Sears - new use policy
by mrissmann March 13, 2007 10:15 AM PDT
Adopting Microsoft's new licensing scheme, Sears has decided that you must register the house in which you buy their Craftman tools for. If you move, the Craftman tools must stay in the house for which they were purchase. They cannot be transfered to another place of residence. Sears will continue to watch this issue and may tighten up the licensing scheme to include year, make and model of car.

Mac Is Just Too Pricey...
by deanja92 December 28, 2007 12:57 AM PST
As much as I hate M$, Mac is too damn expensive here in Kuala Lumpur. A decent PC that I build myself would cost me only around USD500 but a Mac is easily USD1800. Maybe Mac need to step in and endorse outright PC based installation (Intel/AMD/whatever). I'm sure then more & more will defect to MAC, I know I would!
