Vista?
by ipfresh July 13, 2006 9:48 AM PDT
Personally, I haven't seen anything in Vista that makes me want to upgrade. If anything the new "features" just get in my way. In the past, there has always been compelling reasons to upgrade...

Vista vs. OS X
by rmiecznik July 13, 2006 9:54 AM PDT
I've read the comments of these so-called professionals, one of them said that what are people to do ? Buy Macs instead and then he laughted it off.

But, my friend, that is exactly what is happening.

I got so fed up with XP, that I did buy Macs for my self, for the Wife, and so on. When Vista comes out I will get it when my employer pays for the laptop and the software, I my self will no longer be purchasing MS software, because there are better things out there, and that's the truth.

People are switching to Mac and Linux. If Apple was smart, they would re-lease OS X for all PCs, since they run now on Intel, what would happen to Vista and Microsoft ?

I love my Mac, not a single crash, top of the line File System and new upgrades are just around the horizon, I can run all kinds of demanding programs without a sneeze, G5 Rules.

Without it, and IBM there would be no Xbox 360.

No way anyone can tell me that XP is better or Vista, I installed Beta 1 (disappointing and slow), then I wanted to try Beta 2, that wouldn't even install, I got errors and I gave up and threw the disk away.

Office 2007, Please.... you guys screwed the menus up big time.

The thing that makes OSX so fail-proof...
by bourgtai July 15, 2006 8:21 PM PDT
Is the fact that there is only, a handful of configurations of computer that it currently runs on (legally). Windows is multi-platform, and it's made to run on as many different configs as possible. OSX enthusiasts have been running the OSx86 project for a long time now, trying to get Apple's OS to run on normal PCs, and lo and behold, very few configurations are able to run the OS. If Apple tried making OSX a multi-platform system, they'd be having some problems, too.

Oh, and $100 for a near-annual bump from 10.x to 10.y? That's not my idea of smart consumerism...

I am by no means a MS fan and the only reason I continue to run Windoze is for gaming. I am PO'd that DX10 is Vista only. I have had no issues with winxp though as an OS other than the price tag. I don't have hardly any issues with viruses or Malware as I know how to operate a MS OS and have had a few years experience hardening Windoze.

To say Apple is the answer...they may not have any problems now with Malware or viruses but OSX is far from bullet proof. No software is...it is nearly impossible. If Apples market share were to significantly increase then the problems will come with it too. Not only would the problems increase, but instead of dealing with an OS monopoly you would also be locked into a hardware platform as well.

The only reasonable answer is the PC platform running a 'nix OS.

I know that Apple wants to control their own hardware and stuff, and I don't remember saying that Apple is the ultimate and only answer.

I stil use Slackware Linux and love it, Suse is good too.

Sun Solaris is a good advanced OS for networks, way better then Windows as far as network stuff goes, and Solaris will work on PCs as well, don't even need to buy anything they sell.

going for them. Market Share.
Since they only have 3.x% of the market, they have the luxury of doing what they do best...What is that you ask? Ripping people off for PC hardware with an Apple logo. I'm typing this on a MacBook Pro running Vista Beta 2. It runs better than OS X. Since running the 10.4.7 update, its been thew most unreliable POS version of the OS ive ever used. To say that the mac is problem free is bull. Well, maybe not for a home computer but in a huge company they are nightmares...TONS of hardware problems - i've sent back almost 20 brand new DC G5's for things like, faulty power supplies, bad DVD-R's, Crappy memory..We dont have nearly the same problems on our 600 PC's that we have on 180 macs...OS X is nice, I am a fan of both windows and os x, but come on...Face it..OS X will not get far...MS will sell 70 million+ copies of Vista in the 1st month of its release...And so far, as I stated, ive had positive experiences on a the few machines i have installed Vista on...OS X? this morning, I had to go through 10 different versions of restore cd's to find the right one for that particular machine...Thats BS...

I somehow doubt..
by Mmmhmm July 13, 2006 11:15 AM PDT
That the response of XP users who are disappointed with Vista would be to 'convert to Mactholicism'. Chances are more likely that if XP does what they need to accomplish things with their computers they're just going to stick with XP. Vista will phase itself in as the OS that comes with 'new computers' while XP stays the main OS for a while until the bulk of people upgrade to new systems. So what if vista is late? It's not like that'll keep most windows users from doing everything they already do and plan to do with their computers.

Microsoft is to GM as...
by shanewalker July 13, 2006 11:41 AM PDT
Apple is to Toyota/Infiniti.

Some folks buy one or the other because of various priorities/
predilictions.

Which company is truly forward thinking is starting to
show...and its starting to show in several embarassing ways.

It may have taken a while, but folks might just get off the "I love
my *****, even though its in the shop all the time and it gets bad
marks for efficiency or modern design, etc." and realize that
there's been something better all along. They'll realize that
going "cheaper" and "more mainstream" is not a bargain nor the
safest investment when you look at productivity and real value.

Ah, but thank goodness my new Toshiba laptop is 'Vista-Ready'.
I might just feel its safe to upgrade--in 2008.

But I'll be buying a new Mac well before then and getting a LOT
done in the mean-time...;)

Buy a Mac and spend time learning how to do things differently and hope that everything I use is available (let alone the cost of purchasing Mac versions of all of my software except for some of the Open Source ones).

Wait until after Vista rolls out, goes through the ringer and get many of the more blatant bugs worked out of the system and wait until I am ready to purchase a new computer (since mine works fine right now as is).

Keep using Linux and continue with the FREE upgrades to the OS, be able to run it well after Microsoft and Apple have changed something major in their requirements (such as the chip it runs on, or the hardware requirements), get most of my software free of cost, easy one-step updates and minimal (practically) no virus' and malware.

Decisions, decisions....

Umm, one really big bone to pick:
by Penguinisto July 13, 2006 12:06 PM PDT
"I highly doubt that a delay of another four weeks will cause somebody to buy a Mac or switch to Linux. We've waited five years already, what's another month?"

Tell that to the suckers^M-corporate clients who paid large sums of money for Microsoft's Software Assurance Program. 2007 (or later?) will likely cause Vista to come out after the individual contracts expire in many cases, which means a lot of companies stand to realize that they wasted a lot of money.

You go wasting a company's money like that, and (if they're smart) they start looking for alternatives.

MS Windows APOLOGISTS
by technewsjunkie July 13, 2006 12:26 PM PDT
It doesn't surprise me, but is always dissapointing to me that
Windows users (I am one) will rationalize problems with Windows
and Microsoft (five plus year delays now). ONe person suggested
that these delays are Microsoft's "listening to customers". How
pathetic a rationale that is.

I'm in my late forties but several of the the some of the people
quoted apparently have no sense of history with Micorosoft and
Windows.
Someone wrote there is "nothing wrong" with his Vista Beta
except
for some "reliability and compatibility issues"! LOL! What if that
were a car?? Would that be acceptable in other products? It is for
Windows users because that's all they know because most are
unaware of Mac or Linux alternatives.

Macs now run Windows natively. One PC, two CHOICES
by technewsjunkie July 13, 2006 12:33 PM PDT
With Parallels or BootCamp runnning on Intel based Macs, a
consumer can now get BOTH operating systems on ONE machine.
Better yet, it's on Apple Engineered hardware:-)

"2 for the price of 1" as long as you don't need a PCMCIA slots for connecting your laptop to the internet via Cellular lines.

Actually it's 3+ for 1 PC since Linux has been able to go onto Macs, Windows, Solaris and more for a long time now.

"Better yet, it's on Apple Engineered hardware"

How about you open your macbook pro or any intel based mac to find almost all standard pc hardware..

Lets look at that shall we?

HDD - "Engineered by Toshiba"
Display Adapter - "Engineered by ATI"
DVD - "Engineered by Matshita"
Firewire "Engineered by AGERE"
NIC's - "Engineered by Atheros and Marvel"
CPU - "Engineered by INTEL"
Audio - "Engineered by SigmaTEL"
TPM - "Engineered by Infineon"

Okay, so the only thing "engineered by apple was the case (Cheap and flimsy{SP}) in my mind, and the Apple "LOGO" that lights up...

Please, All of the hardware used in a new intel mac is all pc hardware from pc manufactures..

The only thing apple "engineered in their platform is the UI..BSD - OpenSouce 50 yr old OS with eye candy (but not really)

Vista looks cleaner than OS X, Ive even had die hard Mac fans (friends of mine) say they were quite impressed..

hmmm on my pc i have had multi boot to windows xp, vista, server 2003, linux and even in windows XP i had apple software running on a emulator and could use apple software. so 2 OS's on one machine is nothing. big deal. and windows will run better on a pc for half the price of a mac. people that ***** about windows do not realize that it isnt the OS that usually is the problem as it's usually 3rd party crap that causes issues. my PC hasnt crashes in anything other than a game(that has issues due to a recent patch) in well over a year. the only crash is in the game and the game shuts down but OS doesnt crash, and that is the games software issue ( look up battlefield 2 ver 1.3 issues). apples are good for people like " well why did my car break down? i put gas in it, it should go then right?"

With Bootcamp, to do it legally, the consumer would have to pay a premium price for the full-version of Windows.

Then, they would have to go through the additional hassle of installing Windows themselves, rather than having it preinstalled.
