History Repeating Itself
by American Patriot March 4, 2006 9:16 PM PST
My Fellow Americans,

Those citizens who choose not to study and learn from history are condemed to repeat it. There are plenty of examples in world history and specifically in United States history which help to make sense of what is happening to the US economy and the flight of jobs. Let me give you a number of examples.

1. Early US industrialists stole machinery blueprints from British manufactureres because it was far cheaper to manufacture products in the US. I guess turn about is fair play.

2. Does anyone know who is the largest investor in the US. Believe it or not it is Great Britian.
The British realized early on that it was cheaper to manufacture their products in the US where there were limited labor laws rather than manufacture in Great Britain and deal with more restrictive labor laws there.

3. The American Civil War was as much about economics as it was about preserving the Union. Northern manufacturers and farmers feared the cheap "slave labor" of the South. It was becoming more and more difficult for the North to compete with the South as time went on. Reconstruction ensured that the South would never be a threat to the North again.

4. Labor Unions brought fairness and prosperity to the average American, but few remember how it was obtained. A lot of blood was spilled on the picket lines and American manufacturers did not give in without a fight. They had no loyalty to the American worker then and they only negotiated with the unions because for many years we were the only game in town. Now they have other options overseas and they are now exploiting them just as they would exploit you right now if US law would allow them to.

5. When Wall Street crashed because speculators such as Joe Kennedy, that' right, JFK's father were pumping stocks and dumping them, who do you think FDR tapped to run the Securities and Exchange Commission which was formed to prevent "pump and dump" as well as for a number of other regulatory issues. Good old Joe Kennedy, an expert in "pump and dump" and one of it's biggest participants.

I could go on and on, but your probably more interested in watching your favorite TV show or sporting event rather than truly doing something about the current state of the United States. It's a known fact that television and sports is the opiate of the American mass.

But if by chance I am wrong and you are really interested in changing things and doing so quickly, then you should consider doing the following:

1. Turn off your TV. Begin to think for yourself. Read! Don't allow yourself to be brainwashed by the "editorialized news" or swayed by the empty promises of "election year advertising" on television. Take the big corporate dollars out of the elections. Make their dollars meaningless!

2.Use the power of your vote. The Framers of the Constitution gave you the most powerful tool in the world. Your vote. Vote out every incumbent and if an incumbent decides to leave Congress vote for the other party. The following year do the same thing. This will do two things. First it will make it clear to all the lawyers that a career in politics feathering their own nest by lining their pockets with corporate dollars is not such a great career path any longer. Second, it will allow individuals who really care about this country to get into office because truth and patriotism will become more important than the "marketed patriotism" that big corporate dollars can buy.

3. Simply stop going to the big box stores such as Kmart, Target, Home Depot and Kmart. Demand products produced by countries that are on a level playing field with the US. Demand products which are not produced by virtual slaves in China, Mexico, etc. I guarantee that when their sales plummet and the containers start to pile up at the wharves, things will begin to change. Don't think of it as a boycott. Think of it as a strike. You will not cross the picket line until workers are treated on par with the rest of us. Once that happens does it really make sense to ship a product half way around the world when the cost to produce this product is almost the same in the US? Jobs will flood back to the US in buckets.

4. Insist that we become energy self sufficient in four years, not ten. Make the incumbents responsible. If they make it happen, reward them with reelection. If they don't, vote them out as I have previously stated.Insist that we separate ourselves from the Middle East. Insist on a Manhattan Project such as we had during WWII. We beat everyone to the atomic bomb, we synthesized rubber when the Japanese cut off our supply. We created "Higgins boats" to land troops on French beaches which the Germans thought would be very difficult to land on. These same boats were used to defeat the Japanese island by island in the Pacific! My point is that most people want hydrogen powered cars. You cannot just want it. You must demand it through your vote! Don't settle!

5. Demand the creation of a trading block such as the European Union. Perhaps we should join the EU. Turkey has been trying to get into the EU for a very long time and can't seem to accomplish it. Why? Their policies on human rights and a variety of other topics violates EU mandates. Therefore, they don't get into the EU unless they change their ways. Can you imagine if the largest and most lucrative markets in the world, the US, Canada, The European Union, Australia, New Zealand, etc, etc, were closed to China and India because they would not operate on a level playing field? Things would change in a hurry. But only if you use YOUR VOTE!

Midterm elections are coming up in the US Congress. Every citizen use your constitutional right. Think for yourself. Reason. Then VOTE!

Although I agree with much of what you have to say, I do take issue with two items.

1. When you say to vote for the other party, it makes it sound like there are only two choices. While I agree that regularly throwing out the incumbents is a good idea, we don't want to vote for an incompetent just because he or she happens to be running against an incumbent. I advise people to research ALL of the candidates running for office and vote for the best person for the job, not the lesser of two evils. The problem with congress is that it has become too efficient. It should be very difficult to pass new legislation.

2. Energy self-sufficiency in four years is unrealistic. While it is important, it is also something that we want to get right. While hydrogen sounds promising, there are several pitfalls. Hydrogen production today is very expensive and further research needs to be done to lower the cost.
Agreed but

what about American hypocrisy? Everybody wants a level and a fair playing field and blames India and China but often times its US who tries to rig the game. For example, NAFTA was supposed to make things better and grant equal access to US and Canadian companies in each others markets but from beginning itself US is giving canadians a rough deal on lumbar and beef.

Its not your fault and I know your post doesnt encourages this either but americans have to be bit more objective before they blame others.

But nice try though! Er, did you mean Pakistan by any chance? You know that's a country to the North west of India.
We heard WMD stories earlier from someone we all know and now this from you!
Thanks for the entertainment, btw!
What have you been smoking?

Well US never recognised islamic terrorism when India (in kashmir) and russia(chechnya) were bleeding from this scourge. They were supporting taliban and pakistan and iraq for their own motives. Now after 9/11 they know what it feels like to sit on hot pan.

Your comment shows you dont have an idea of whats going on and are on fox news kool aid diet.

On Nukes, india already has nukes and US can do nothing about it. They tested one in 1974 and than 5 in 1998 (and why israel can have one but not india). Both will gain form this deal although indian gets more out of it than US.

I feel sorry for you, when you can't distinguish a friend from a foe. You are way off in your assesments about Indians. Except for few miscreants, most of them are peace loving people and want to get rid of terrorists.
Where were you, when Kashmir was attacked by the same mujahideen.
Just do little research.. You will soon find which people and country need to be natural partners

If you honestly believe that then alright, no one can stop you. But if you do believe such a thing why not just boycott 7-11's and Dunkin Donuts. After all they are suppporing Osama.
Please read the news more carefully

Either you are confused about where or which country India is. A history and geography lesson are highly recommended.
What a joker

Does this guy know that India has been struggling with islamic terrorism since more than 2 decades?
Wont be helpful in long run
by gurup March 5, 2006 11:33 PM PST
Current trend of outsourcing to india will not be helpful to India in the long run. Soon India will reach a stage where it will be costlier to outsource here and US companies will be looking at other cheaper alternatives.

Do you understand value chain?

Dear GP,

I am working for one of the largest software multi national non-indian non-American company as a consultant ( gave you enough hint ;)) . Four years back , no one was willing to give an Indian complete control of a project. Now we have so many people who are leading at various levels .It also means that Indians are working on frontline. Previously we were handling only things like coding and development. We have come a long way. So even if low cost jobs move , there would be enough jobs .
Great idea George but...

How about doing some thing that would make it possible for
Americans to improve skills.
Like....
1. Bring down the interest rate in sutdent loans. At 16% it
cheaper to put tuition on VISA.
2. Make tuition tax deductible! Unless you make next to
mothing, the tax code won't let you deduct tuition.

Will we be be sending our healthcare out of the country? How about our parents that we don't have the funds to put into expensive nursing homes. Cheaper healthcare south of the border? Less restrictions on employees? We can even make it a vacation to visit them.
