Comments on: Novell to chop 600 jobs, shed division
Layoffs are part of major restructuring at the server software maker. The sale of a division could cut at least 400 additional jobs.

- Why is that whenever Novell gets in trouble w/ the numbers they cut payroll? Maybe the company is being mismanaged for the 20th time. It does not take a financial genius to cut payroll and reorganize a company so that you can cut costs.

(3 Comments)There are so many smart people working at Novell. They have some of the best IT engineers on the planet. What Novell needs to do is let the rest of the world know what it has to offer. I never hear how iFolder is an awesome backup solution. It allows you to have your personal data follow you wherever you have the ifolder client running on. That product alone should be marketed properly. But for some reason, Novell likes to keep their real cool products a secret. It is like you need to show Novell that you know the secret handshake first, and then they will tell you what their solutions can do for you.
Another problem is that the company is run by a bunch of bean counters. Here is how the IT world works. If you have products that are easy to obtain, deploy, support and use; IT guys will deploy the solutions. Once the IT guys feel comfortable w/ the products, they then will start to deploy them. If there are obstacles placed before the IT consultants, they will go somewhere else? like Microsoft. IT consultants want to feel that their providers care about them. They encourage feedback and then take action. Novell has not learned how to do this.
The more Novell lays off, the less caring they can give to their employees, resellers, and customers. When you lay off employees? right before the holidays, it does not help spread the love to the right people.
Another big problem w/ Novell is that they do not want to be the best. They do not have the desire to be the best. This comes from the upper management. They do not display the killer instinct on how market their products. They do not have the killer instinct to stay on message.
It is so frustrating watching this company. They could have been awesome. I would love to deploy Novell?s solutions, but if I do not feel like Novell is going to be there for me, why put my neck out for them? Why would I deploy their solutions to my customers? I care about my customers. I want their money and time to be spent wisely.
I believe that they need to place a new captain at the helm. Jack does know jack about running a company.
