If somebody came along to compete with them, Microsoft would immediately take them out by preventing the company doing anything whatsoever. I'm talking commercial wise not the other Free/Apple stuff that is not really competing whatsoever. Where do you really see Apple computer? Its rare. Even Linux isn't really much competition because I rarely see them. Only the computer geeks ever run them pretty much. Most people don't care. They will just run anything that comes with the computer.

1) Microsoft will have to make Windows's server protocals open (as the EU is pushing for).
2) MS will have an official stance on Mono (.NET on Linux), which will probably be favorable towards it.
3) MS will have a real strategy that accepts Linux and open source and begins gearing its own offerings as compliments to open source.
