Quads are unnecessary?

I know that the really cutting edge games and military simulations use AI and a quad core cpu is killer in those applications, but unless a consumer oriented AI application is created the power of a quad cores cpu is not required.

Conroe inside next PowerMac?
by Kent Pribbernow March 7, 2006 1:53 PM PST
So it appears that this Conroe processor is the most likely candidate for the next PowerMac revision. But according to this story, that chip won't be arriving until Q3, which means Apple is going to have a hard time fulfilling its promise to shift entirely to Intel by the end of this year.

Given the dearth of Universal binaries in the pro apps segment, I'd say time is on their side.

Confusing!
by Mr. Dee March 7, 2006 2:37 PM PST
I am overwhelmed and confused. Are any of these processors being targetted at consumer desktops? And whats with that Xeon they are releasing soon (Sossman) could (no 64-bit support)?? Thats crazy, I believe any chip from Intel being targetted at businesses should have 64-bit support, in fact all chips should have 64-bit support!

All I can say is, I won't be buying a new desktop PC until 2008 (value for money). My P4 HT 3.2 GHz is doing me just fine, all I need to upgrade now is the video card when Vista comes around. Also, my AMD 64-Bit Sempron is just a slice of heaven and is doing all I so please at home.
