Comments on: Sun has high expectations for Niagara

The forthcoming processor embraces both the multicore and multithreading approaches more aggressively than does IBM, Intel and AMD.

very cool

Niagara looks very cool .... a 'low' power, 32-way system on a single chip should be awsome for intensive I/O, interrupt happy, workloads like web and database serving.

A real game changer ... Jeff

Sun!!! Saves the world!!! Again!!!

Yawn. I can't be the only observer who has been rendered immune to the Sun hype machine from overexposure. ?From scratch,? my ass. Those cores are apparently heavily-leveraged from UltraSPARC II ? very bleeding edge... Not that Niagara doesn?t have redeeming features; in fact, it seems like a reasonable-enough design. But if Sun were in the car busines selling sensible, well-built sedans, they would market them as upgradeable for interstellar travel.

Sun years ahead of the curve again
by DavidHalko October 31, 2005 5:44 AM PST
The industry has been waiting for this 8 core 4 thread per core CPU for years... this will be a significant boost.
With 5 years to go from drawing board to silicon, the industry will not see a significant competitive product for many years.
With a projected profile of a 1U and 2U high server, there is nothing similar projected from any other vendor.
