redeye software

What was meant in the article is that redeye reduction doesn't come with the chip. It has to do with the software, and the software used by HP is unique to their cameras even though the chip is not.

One day camera will come with chageable immage processors. You will choose you optical platform(s) separate from the image processor(s). Storage and conversion will also become componentized. Cameras will then be able to be customized to the application/industry.

The industry is moving in just the opposite direction. Lens/barrel/housing assemblies are being done with chip-on-board technologies that combine all of those pieces into one sealed module. Most mobile phones are this way today and DSC's aren't far behind.

Not only that, the lens is optimized for the size of the sensor. In general, with the same sized pixel, more pixels are a bigger sensor, bigger sensor needs bigger lens, etc. Unless you want to replace the sensor with something that has the same optical format, you're out of luck.
Sooo. whats the difference
