- Partitions NEW? Nope, think z/OS, TSO, system 360...

- The article mentiones partioning only available currently on certain machines. Typical of the computer journalists of today, they seem to be unaware that "big iron" has been doing partitions for decades. It would be good to see more mainframe (i.e. "Enterprise Server") coverage from computer journalists. I know most users will never even know when they are connecting to a zSeries system running z/OS or Linux for zSeries mainframes... but MOST of the worlds data lives on mainframes. The MIPS being shipped on mainframes continues to grow.

(3 Comments)No, mainframes aren't dead... in fact, much of the technology you are seeing NOW on x86 systems has been around for decades on mainframes. Mainframes continue to grow & improve even now.
I sure hope some students read this & check out just how COOL being able to run virtual linux systems on IBM zSeries system can be. Imagine your boss says "We need 700 new servers set up & ready to go by the end of the month..." Panic???? Nope, enter a few instructions & POOF 700 virtual linux servers appear on the mainframe... ULTRA COOL!
P.S. Don't forget IBM VM (Virtual Machine) that many once thought was dead, but has been updated to run modern Virtual Machines!
Check out the small, modern, IBM mainframe this one company installed http://linux.s390.org/gallery/ it nearly fits under a DESK! Really, it's not much bigger than many PC based servers, but SOOOOOOOO much better at moving data. Even with a lower clock speed than some other PC based system, this thing can move massive amounts of data around quickly!
Check out http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/os/linux/ for a starting point with Linux on zSeries.
Linux is great, but there is still a heck of a lot of life left in z/OS. Want something secure & stable? The z/OS was BUILT from the start for professional level computing. Since mainframes became shared machines, keeping secure & stable in a sharing environment is built in as the heritage. Do you think MS-DOS was built for a shared environment? Nope.
