I hate to see the Alpha go :(

I guess unless the PowerPC takes up more we are going to see Intel become even more dominant.

More competition than you think

You make it sound as if Intel has the lock on the market. In reality, it is the ARCHITECTURE that has the lock - the x86 architecture.

Intel being the driving force of the industry is on a serious decline since AMD beat them to the 64bit-x86 market.

Still, Alpha can be called the Betamax of CPUs, advanced architecture that many emulated (even on hte x86 level) - but it just lost out due to a myriad of reasons.
Alpha the lord of the chips...

Without a doubt some sad news...but nothing that was expected since the HP Compaq merger!
HP interess in Itanium doomed the future of the Alpha chip....Time as proven that the itanium was/is simply a bad choise!
Today I still prefer my Alpha chip running at 600Mhz than Pentium or K7 chips running at similar speeds! I hat hopes that IBM would aquire the Alpha chip and integrate it with the Power PC. With this event now we are left with Power PC, Itanium and x86 a poor choise indeed....
