They were watching towering inferno at the time.
What realism!
In reality though any portable device that contains batteries is subject to meltdown, not necessarily to the extent shown on the Dell laptop fire but still dangerous.
Just the plain-jane alkaline battery can cause damage and possible fire. If you don't believe me then just take a fresh "AA" battery and drop it in your pants pocket with a pocket full of keys.
If you were fool enough to do it you'd never do it again.

what would the keys do to the AA? the only thing that comes to mind is that some electricity might be transferred over to the keys. not necessarily a bang...
