Comments on: Gartner: PC hardware getting more reliable

Parts are going wrong in notebooks less often than before, but they still lag behind desktops.

Interesting, however I wonder how accurate...

In my experience, this has just not been the case. Although I do not have a wide-base of clients, it's interesting how many failures I have seen with hardware in general. Even though most have not been the newest of laptops per se, it seems to me that quality of hardware and controls is decreasing rather than increasing over the years. I also find it interesting that so many people are having such difficulty with warranty on their products. Either the hardware fails very shortly after the warranty expires, or warranty support is not very good at determining the actual cause of failure and puts the Customer through endless frustration when attempting to work toward resolution. It's quite possible that many Customer's have no where to turn and have given up in their pursuit of a solution. Of course, this is only one Tech's opinion (qualifying that with an approx. 25 year background). I see a trend in the future that is just the opposite... with cost cutting, outsourcing, etc.. However, I hope I am mistaken. If this continues, along with all the other technical issues going on (i.e., malware, and other security related issues), I wonder if the Industry will have many Customers left (meaning the little guy who can't keep up, and has difficulty when trying to obtain any "real" help). Again, just my opinion and concerns for the Computer Industry as a whole and as it relates to the future.
