Success at Costco could mean more shelf space elsewhere for Dell's PCs, some analysts suggest.

$99 Shipping And Handling Fee
by Stating November 29, 2005 11:58 PM PST
Dell charges as much as $99 for shipping and handling now. That is how they make money off of their low come-on prices. Wouldn't selling direct through Costco upset that apple cart?

Dell can't compete in the consumer area...

Sure buy a mediocre laptop for $899 and what warranty do you get with it? At least in the consumer arena Dell is famous for it's "bait and switch" approach. Like offering the most trimmed-down system at a reasonable cost. Oh but you want more than 256MB of memory? Have we got a deal for you. Oh you want more than 40GB of disk? You want more than a Celeron? And on and on.
Then on top of that it normally cost about $100 to ship, even a laptop? What is up with that? I can't even see that with their desktop systems, much less with a laptop. It's not like Michael Dell hand delivers the system to your door.

Costco may seel some just based on the fiction that Dell is better. But Dell is just an Intel cloner. Whatever Intel sells, Dell sells. So you are better off going with an EMachine, HP, Gateway or any other brand since Dell does not differiate itself in this market area.

by Paul Johnston December 1, 2005 1:53 AM PST
Dell have been selling notebooks in New Zealand through a retail
outlet called "The Warehouse" for almost 2 years. Same story, old
technology cheap prices (New Zealand$999.00) about US$699.
