This Is The Second Patch To 6.5
by Stating June 20, 2006 6:04 PM PDT
I had to install a post-6.5 patched version last week on 6/15 to fix a problem with Zones defintion updates. The antivirus defs were not being updated properly (even a manual update failed). The spyware def updates worked correctly. Today's release is now the second post 6.5 "patch". I am very glad I did not roll 6.5 out to my user base yet.

ZA

Actually, I havent' been affected by the ZA updates at all. Of course, I don't use McAfee Antivirus--too much of a memory hog, I use AVG which works really well.

Zone Labs better get their act together, they don't want to have a daily fix like IE going on! LOL!

ZA 6.5 - many issues
by arthro June 21, 2006 8:24 PM PDT
I have been a loyal Zone Alarm user for years. Last year I abandoned Norton (after many years) for Zone Alarm Security Suite, System Mechanic 6 and Perfect Disk Live.

I find all of these choices to be superior to Norton in almost every way, but I am disappointed in ZA in how it acts with other apps - and their apparent inability or unwillingness to fix it.

I have had conflicts with Perfect Disk and Microsoft Update since ZA 6.1. None of these have been resolved by ZoneLabs. There are workarounds which are a short-term fix at best.

If ZA wants to predominate in the security field, it better figure out better how to play well with others. You can have the best app in the world, but if it doesn't work with others and doesn't care, it will fail. Zone Alarm support sucks - get a clue.

I have two currently working identified issues with ZA - it stops Microsoft Update (bad bad) and it prevents Perfect Disk from doing offline NTFS defrag.

Perfect Disk has a workaround which works, Microsoft currently suggests shutting down your ZA firewall (GREAT IDEA) - although I have discovered that turning off "cookie control" in ZA works.

Why am I paying for this grief? If Microsoft's combined solution works, I will be a customer when my ZA license expires - if not before.
