This is just what I need ...
by USDecliningDollar May 4, 2004 8:42 AM PDT
I need MS to come in and screw up my T.V., DVD Player, yadda, yadda, yadda or for some major security flaw to be exposed, leaving my personal appliances to be hosed by some hacker.

No Thanks!

Future PC
by RicktheBrick May 4, 2004 9:07 AM PDT
The future pc described in the article does not come close to what should be done in the near future. First computers should have a extensive dictionary and enclycopedia in rom and a natural language interface to them. Second the pc should communicate with everything that causes flow (electricity, gas, water) in my house. It should have the means to correct any problems created by that flow. Third it should be communicating with a central computer which should know almost instantly if my computer somehow loses that communication and than correct that problem. It should have a speaker/microphone in every room of the house. It should be able to recognize by the sound, problems such as break-ins, someone falling or calling for help. It should communicate with the owner if it suspects a problem. It should have the means to call outside help if needed. A camera should be in every room. The computer should be able to turn it on only when there is a problem in that room(break-in,fire,violence). It would take a court order for anyone to view these pictures. Computers should be so dependable that I should be able to go to bed in a totally sound proof bedroom with the computer being able to take care of the rest of the house.

The future looks dark

What Mr. Gates and his techies are proposing sounds great and wonderful, but anyone worth his pocket protector is aware of the logs that windows creates (including every site you've ever been to). Now take that, and multiply it to the power of home. With his "future PC," he will not only keep logs of the sites we go to, but he will keep logs on what we eat, how much electricity we consume, when we are/are not at home. The list goes on. Pretty soon, he starts a reports company that can accurately tell manufacturers our habits.

I for one can do without a windows machine controlling my heating, or my tv. God forbid the thing stopped responding when I tell it to turn up the heat, or, even worse, I see a BSOD on my tv. No thanks Mr. Gates. Keep future on your little island in Washington.
