The 2007 turbo tax was a bear to work with. I ran our tax return 3 times and came up with a different answer every time. Now, for 2008, with it doubling in price for the basic edition, I am seriously considering giving Tax Cut a try. It has all the same features at 1/2 of the cost. I refuse to go to the intuit website and input all my personal information to file my return for what it use to cost me for the program, which I could then use to do my kids' tax returns too. I fear Turbo Tax has lost a long long long time customer by doubling the price of its Basic edition.

Years ago I switched to TaxCut because of Turbotax's atrocious customer service. I was ready to return to Turbotax because TaxCut had made calculation errors for two years running. One year I received a slightly larger refund, the next year I owed the IRS hundreds more. (Amazingly, calculation errors rather than data entry problems were issues in both years.) TaxCut's people disbelieved that their program could have a problem and were not ready to resolve the issue in a timely manner. On the other hand, Turbotax Deluxe calculated that I owed nearly $2000 to the IRS for 2008 while TaxCut (online Premium version) calculated a return of approximately $870. TaxAct (online version) calculated that the IRS owed me $845 - nearly the same as TaxCut. Both Turbotax and TaxAct disallowed a deduction that TaxCut has allowed for three years running. I choose TaxAct because it was only $16.95 compared to the overpriced TaxCut and Turbotax products. It took less than 24 hours to find that the IRS and my state tax organization accepted my return. I'm delighted that a more reasonably priced program like TaxAct is available.
