Okaaay... what "intellectual property risk" is Laurie Wurster yawping about? Or is she still clinging to the old SCO-churned FUD from 2003 (which has since been stomped flat)?

I can under stand what she is saying, and I can also understand how this can work to its favor for some companies.

Say I have a need for software. I can buy brand
a) which will cost me x amount which will require formal bidding process or a lengthy purchase process.

or

b) Software that has no upfront cost so is not in cost center z, but requires mainteance which is in cost center x which has a different and easier process.

When she is talking about risk, is the softwares ability to conform to Corp Governace requirements and SOX. To date we have had issues with OSS due to issues in both of these cases that have had corp gov job the project.
