Comments on: Tech may not shed so many jobs this time

Whatever job cuts occur in the technology sector in the coming months, they're unlikely to be as deep or as lasting as the cuts that occurred in the dot-com bust.

I hate to be a downer but in some area's some people haven't recovered from the last tech bust before this one occurred. While some companies might not lay off it's tech staff, others will for any reason they can find.

This time is indeed different - you don't see employees getting six-figure jobs just to write HTML. You also don't see massive swag and benefits, as IT is now just like the 'grown-up' departments in a company... you (as stated in the article) hire the folks you actually need. I remember in 2001 a banner in San Francisco that I had seen off of the main freeway (somewhere around Milpitas) that still causes me to laugh: " We need 500 MCSEs! Now Hiring!" I bet you'll never see the likes of that one anymore. :)

Really, it's different this time? No kidding!! This time it's the financials, not the techs that is causing the problems.
