The sociopaths of the virtual world

January 24, 2008 6:45 AM PST – Posted by Andy Smith

They're called "griefers" and they get their kicks by causing virtual vandalism in peaceful worlds such as Second Life. Attacks of blue cubes falling from the sky, giant Super Mario figures, and flying phalluses created by griefers are not uncommon. Why do they do this? "For laughs," confesses one griefer.

Griefers are often told to "get a life" which is exactly what they are encouraging others to do. People who burn time and money on stuff like MMORPGs are the ones who have no lives. Griefers just call them on it.

Griefers also look up your email address in Internet databases to get your phone number and harass you at 2 or 3 AM in the morning. They coordinate attacks via IRC channels and attack you anywhere online, and when you stop going online they harass you by phone. Usually using a caller ID spoofer like 000-001-2345 as the number or Out of Area caller.

I've known many people who got hit by them that way. There ought to be a law against it, but the Internet is wild territory that allows people to avoid the law and do whatever they want.

sounds like cops in my town abusing technology to abuse people they can't arrest for a crime. i guess that's why there is no war against these people. the law is doing it.

Griefers fail at life because they go around causing problems for other people instead of focusing on their own. They're not being clever or funny or enlightening people at all. They just get off on being cruel to others because their real lives are in such a disastrous state.
