First-tier notebook vendors pushing 4GB products next year

Memory makers expect big changes in the DRAM market when top notebook vendors start rolling out laptops with significantly more memory. Vendors such as Dell, HP, and Toshiba are expected to start pushing laptops with 4GB of RAM next year, four times the current mainstream spec of 1GB. Memory module makers say even with that boost, falling memory prices mean that memory will account for even less of the cost of a laptop than before.

This means a stronger pressure for adoption of 64 bit vista and 64 bit programs. Programs running on 32 bit vista can not fully take advantage of 4 Gb. More pressure on IT departments, to get vista approved for their environment. Even on my new 2Gb laptop, I'm regularly running out of space. Just have Google Earth running in the background almost does the job!

Um, the Apple MacBook Pros have supported 4 GB of RAM for a long time now. No way next year marks the "first ever."

The story say) "first-tier" which leaves Apple out of the mix.

You need to read it again-they are going to supply 4 GB. Laptops could support 4 GB. Apples NEED 4GB because they are so inefficient.
